It's Staff Appreciation Week! To share your thanks for staff and teachers, please stop in the hallway by the main office starting Monday. You can jot your messages of gratitude on a post-it note (or two! or three!), and stick them on the window.

The Muir Messenger | May 7, 2018

Hi Muir families,

Thanks to everyone who contributed time, energy and resources to Family Fun Night! It was a blast, and we especially salute the team that planned it: Carlie Craig, Jesse Gerhardt and Erica Hemberger, plus Kathleen Spencer and Traci Janikowski.

Staff appreciation week is May 7-11. Please sign up to contribute to this awesome annual tradition HERE. Kudos to Carlie Craig ( and Andrea Slotten ( for coordinating all 1st grade donations for pizza and cake; April Anderson ( for coordinating all 2nd grade donations for tacos; and Kathleen Spencer ( for coordinating all 3rd grade donations for the popcorn. If you're a 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade parent, please feel free to give them a shout directly. If anyone else wants to help out with staff appreciation by organizing a specific grade level, email Thanks to the fabulous Jessie Young for coordinating EVERYTHING! (And Kathleen Spencer, too. She hates having her name mentioned, but we just have to give her a shout-out.)

Have a fantastic week,

Kathleen Spencer, President,
Traci Janikowski & Scott Wildman, Co-Vice Presidents,
Lennie Marcott, Secretary,
Andrea Southgate, Treasurer,

Monday, May 7-Friday, May 11. There are so many ways to contribute to this fun annual tradition, which will include everything from walking tacos to a popcorn bar. Visit our sign-up genius HERE. And don't forget to stop in the hallway by the office to jot a post-it note of thanks, and stick it to the window.

Tuesday, May 8, 6:30pm, likely in room 25. Childcare provided. Join us.
We will elect next year's executive board, discuss safety concerns, review teacher grants, and other fun stuff.

Friday, June 1

Our spring Box Top collection drive is underway. The class that gathers the most Box Tops (average per student) by the deadline of June 1 will earn a class party and an individual free pass to Pump-It-Up. Clip and turn in your Box Tops in a Ziploc baggie or envelope labeled with your child’s name and teacher. Contact Jenny with questions at

Our playground is open, and it's fabulous! Thanks again to Jess Yehle, Kim Cowles and Andrea Kreft for overseeing our project from start to finish. The ribbon cutting last week was a hit with students, donors, and staff alike. And Mrs. Kreft even presented SMENCILS to Jess and Kim (those lucky ladies) and it wasn't even their birthday (!!). Congratulations to everyone who made the playground possible.
There are ten of these little silver plaques hidden on and around the new equipment, in memory of Michael Perchik, Muir alum. Can you find them all? We're so glad that Michael is with us in spirit on the playground, which he would have loved. Thanks to his mom and dad, Barb and Bruce, for letting us honor Michael in this special way.

This is your PTO
This week we are glad to recognize Jenny Talarczyk, who has served as our Box Tops coordinator for years. Thanks, Jenny! In addition, she's also helped out with Family Fun Night and Staff Appreciation. She has Henry in 5th grade and Katherine in 1st grade.

Why it’s rewarding to give back: Volunteering for the school allows me to contribute to all the great events we put on. Our individual contributions make a collective impact on our school. As the expression goes, "Many hands make light work."
What I appreciate about our school community: The warmth and the welcoming spirit of the Muir staff and families. I’ve enjoyed getting to know so many different families.

My favorite family-friendly recipe: Chicken enchiladas!

10 flour tortillas

4 cooked chicken breasts, cubed

8 oz. sour cream

1 ½ cup grated cheddar cheese

2 cups cream of chicken soup

1 can diced green chilies

5 green onions, chopped

Combine soup, sour cream, chilies, and onions.  Put ⅓ of the mixture aside. Mix chicken with remaining mixture. Scoop chicken mixture into the tortillas and roll up.  Place in a greased 9x13 dish. Spread remaining mixture on top. Cook for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Spread cheese over the top and put back until melted.

The end of the year may be in sight, but our teachers always have new ideas and needs for projects and supplies. Click HERE to make a classroom donation that will be greatly appreciated.
