The Muir Messenger | April 9, 2018

Hi Muir families,

Our bake sale was a success last week, thanks to ALL OF YOU. Thank you for baking and volunteering and even purchasing items. Because of your generosity and enthusiasm, we raised more than $600.

Reminder that Thursday is early release for parent teacher conferences. While you're at school, make sure to stop by our book fair in the LMC. You can shop noon until 7pm. We'll have teacher wish lists, a raffle, and even a fun game for families. It's not too late to sign up to volunteer, HERE. We are also providing snacks for our staff (thanks to teacher appreciation chair Jessie Young for coordinating) so they have something to munch on during their long day at school. Please sign up HERE

Our playground install is set for
Friday, April 27. By doing a self installation, which is supervised and assisted by our vendor, we'll save a whopping $12,800. Click HERE for more information and to sign up to lend a hand. Still want to leave your mark? Gifts of $250+ received before April 15 will be listed on the playground. For all the project details - and to donate - click HERE.

Have a terrific week,

Kathleen Spencer, President,
Traci Janikowski & Scott Wildman, Co-Vice Presidents,
Lennie Marcott, Secretary,
Andrea Southgate, Treasurer,

Ms. DesJardins found this sweet note on the playground the other day. "It reassured me that we have so many caring families here at Muir," she said. "I thought it might bring a smile to the faces of everyone reading the Muir Messenger!" We agree. Thanks for sharing, Ms. D!

Thursday, April 12. Early release at 11:35am. Sign up to volunteer at the book fair HERE. Sign up to contribute to the staff appreciation snack bar HERE.

Sunday, April 15. Order your yearbook HERE.

Friday, April 20, 5:30-7:30pm. Details below.

Friday, April 27. Professional development day for staff. This will be the day for our NEW MUIR PLAYGROUND INSTALLATION!

Friday, May 4, 5:30-7:30pm in the two gyms.

Muireka, Muir's family science night, is just around the corner! Join us Friday, April 20, 5:30-7:30pm. If your student is interested in participating, please fill out the registration form HERE. This link can also be used if you'd like to volunteer your time at the event or make a cake to help celebrate the anniversary of John Muir's birthday. In addition to the fabulous student projects on display, we will have activity booths run by community volunteers, including BadgerBOTs, Insect Ambassadors, and much more. We hope you'll attend! Questions? Please contact Kim Cowles at

Reminder: If you are looking for a way to promote your business while making a positive impact on the community, please consider supporting Muir's Gardener-In-Residence program. For a fully tax-deductible donation of $500 a year (for three years), we will recognize and promote your business in a variety of ways. Please email or for more details.

This is your PTO!
This week we are thrilled to feature Krista Donnelly, who has three children: Reese (8), Ellie (5), and Deacon (3). Krista has volunteered in numerous capacities at Muir for the last few years; just recently, she helped to plan and run the bake sale. (THANKS, KRISTA!) Krista's favorite thing about our school community are the staff and teachers. "They are clearly what makes Muir the place that it is; they simply do an amazing job." What about her favorite Muir activities? "The talent show and Muireka are a couple of my favorites." Krista is glad to share the famous Donnelly family salsa recipe, courtesy of her mother-in-law, Donna:
Ingredients: 3 Jalapeno peppers, 1 bunch of green onions, 1 TSP salt, 3 TBSP lemon juice, 2 28oz cans of petite diced tomatoes.
Directions: Cut peppers (remove some seeds to take down the
spiciness) and onions into 2-inch pieces. Pulse them in a food processor. Remove and add lemon juice and salt. Pulse the 2 cans of tomatoes slightly and add to the green mixture. Enjoy!

It's spring! Our teachers always have new ideas and needs for projects and supplies in their classrooms, especially now that the weather is getting nice again. Click HERE to make a classroom donation that will be greatly appreciated.
Congrats to the Kings of Kindness and Mr. Ray Ray for a successful popcorn sale on Election Day. Proceeds will be used to do some clean-up projects around the school.
Are you interested in working as a crossing guard for the 2018-2019 school year? It's 10-15 hours a week, with a starting pay of $16.52 per hour. Some flexibility is required for early release dates. This is a perfect job for a retiree, grandparent, or stay-at-home parent. Visit HERE in late June/early July to apply. Interviews will be held in mid-August, and the job will start around August 29. For more information, please contact the City of Madison Police Dept. Crossing Guard Supervisors at 266-4703 (Patti Knoche or Virginia Kravik).
