Bake sale! Book fair! New playground install! Details below.

The Muir Messenger | April 2, 2018

Hi Muir families,

Welcome back to school; hope you had a great break! We have three big items to share today.

BAKE SALE: Tuesday, April 3. It's Election Day, and this is a terrific way for the PTO to raise funds from voters casting their ballots at Muir. We need lots of help making and selling (especially in the morning) baked goods. Please sign up HERE. We know this is right after break and not the most ideal timing, so we doubly appreciate your efforts.

BOOK FAIR: Thursday, April 12.
Parents can shop noon until 7pm. We'll have teacher wish lists, a raffle, and even a fun game for families. Sign up to volunteer HERE.

PLAYGROUND INSTALL: The playground committee is thrilled to announce that the new playground will be installed Friday, April 27. WE NEED YOUR HELP (especially adults!). By doing a self installation, which is supervised and assisted by our vendor, we'll save a whopping $12,800. Click HERE for more information and to sign up to lend a hand.
Still want to leave your mark and donate? Gifts of $250+ received before April 15 will be listed on the playground. For all the project details - and to donate - click HERE.

Thanks for ALL YOU DO to make Muir such a welcoming learning community,

Kathleen Spencer, President,
Traci Janikowski & Scott Wildman, Co-Vice Presidents,
Lennie Marcott, Secretary,
Andrea Southgate, Treasurer,

The playground install (both on April 27 and during the summer) will ultimately include:
*Replacing the aging equipment on the southern half of the playground with two large play structures, a climbing web, and more
*Replacing the blacktop and installing new hoops and tetherball pole
*Improving fencing along the playground perimeter
*Installing a creative playspace corner
*Constructing an outdoor classroom space
Get ready! It's going to be incredible.

Tuesday, April 3. Sign up to bake and/or volunteer HERE.

Thursday, April 12. Early release at 11:35am. Sign up to volunteer at the book fair HERE.

Sunday, April 15. Order your yearbook HERE.

Friday, April 20, 5:30-7:30pm. Watch for more information about ways to participate and get involved in our annual science fair.

Friday, April 27. Professional development day for staff. This will be the day for our NEW MUIR PLAYGROUND INSTALL!

Friday, May 4, specific time to be determined.

Are you looking for a way to promote your business while making a positive impact on the community? Do you know of an organization that is interested in giving back locally? The GROW committee is welcoming individuals, businesses, and organizations to help fund our Gardener-In-Residence at Muir. We are asking for a commitment of $500 a year for three years. In return for this (fully tax-deductible) generosity, we will promote donor businesses and organizations with signs in the garden, reference in our communications, etc.  This is a great way to show support for the unique and healthy programming at Muir, thanks to the tireless work of our Gardener-In-Residence! Please contact Becky Hustad or Bethney Pickhardt if you would like more information or have ideas about businesses that might wish to partner with us.

Attention kid artists and designers!  The Wisconsin Association for Talented and Gifted invites students in grades K-12 to submit logo designs for its annual conference. This year's theme is "The Power of Student Voice: Our Dreams, Our Needs." Entries are due to Ms. Ishikawa by April 4. For details, please click HERE

This is your PTO!
My name is Cori Ludwig! My husband Brent and I have three kiddos. We have loved Muir and all that it has to offer, including its outdoor learning and gardening, diversity, Black History Program, Multicultural Dinner, classroom presentations, and amazing teachers. Muir excels at including everyone in its school and neighboring community and celebrating our different backgrounds. We feel truly blessed to be a part of it.
I've been lucky enough to be a classroom volunteer in each of my kids' classrooms, and also help out on the PTO with Muireka, bake sales, movie night, fundraising, and staff appreciation. Through all of these opportunities, I've gotten to know Muir's incredible staff and students and they are wonderful. I can only hope that my family has impacted Muir in the positive way that Muir has impacted our family.
*Check out Cori's favorite family-friendly recipe below for Banana-Oatmeal Snack Cake.

Ludwig Family's Banana-Oatmeal Snack Cake

1 cup butter, softened

1 cup sugar

1 tsp vanilla

2 eggs, beaten

1 cup buttermilk

bananas, mashed (I use 3)

2 cups flour

1 1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup oatmeal

1 cup chocolate chips

1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Add bananas and buttermilk; stir. Add oatmeal, blend. Add flour, soda and salt, mix. Add chocolate chips. Pour into greased 9x13 pan. Sprinkle nuts on top. Bake 30-35 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool before serving. Enjoy!

Did you know that many of our amazing Muir staff pay for classroom supplies out of their own pockets? Let's help them out! Check out our teacher wish list to donate in ways big and small. Every item counts and make a direct difference to your child's teacher. Go HERE to sign up.
