Family Fun Night and Staff Appreciation Week are coming up fast. But first... Tremendous thanks to Jess Yehle, Kim Cowles and Andrea Kreft for leading the charge with our new playground. WOW!

The Muir Messenger | April 30, 2018

Hi Muir families,

Thanks to the amazing folks who helped install our new playground last Friday and Saturday! What a terrific team we had - and doing it ourselves saved us upwards of $12,000! Above all, we have to give Jessica Yehle, Kim Cowles and Andrea Kreft the biggest shout-out ever for coordinating the playground from start to finish. We have been so lucky to have them as our fearless leaders for nearly a year. Words can't express our gratitude, ladies.

Family Fun Night is just days away! Click HERE to see how you can get involved. There will be snacks, a DJ, a photo booth and more. This is such a fun yearly event for our Muir community, so thanks for making it possible.

Staff appreciation week is coming up, May 7-11. Please sign up to contribute to this awesome annual tradition HERE. There will be walking tacos, a popcorn bar, Chick-fil-A and lots more. Kudos to Carlie Craig ( and Andrea Slotten ( for coordinating all 1st grade donations for pizza and cake;
April Anderson ( for coordinating all 2nd grade donations for tacos; and Kathleen Spencer ( for coordinating all 3rd grade donations for the popcorn. If you're a 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade parent, please feel free to give them a shout directly. If anyone else wants to help out with staff appreciation by organizing a specific grade level, email Thanks to the fabulous Jessie Young for coordinating EVERYTHING!

Have a fantastic week,

Kathleen Spencer, President,

Tuesday, May 8, 6:30pm, likely in room 25. Childcare provided. Join us!
We will elect next year's executive board, discuss safety concerns, review teacher grants, and other fun stuff.

Our spring Box Top collection drive is underway! The class that gathers the most Box Tops (average per student) by the deadline of June 1 will earn a class party and an individual free pass to Pump-It-Up. You can find the 10₵ for Box Tops coupons on hundreds of your favorite products and brands. Please help by clipping and turning in all coupons in a Ziploc baggie or envelope labeled with your child’s name and teacher. To participate in the contest, students should turn in Box Tops directly to their classroom teacher. If you have questions, please contact Jennifer Talarczyk at

Andrea Kreft, Betsy Scholz, and the PTO coordinated a last-minute breakfast for Friday's in-service day to show staff our gratitude after a very long and stressful week. We can't thank them enough for staying so positive and keeping our kids safe!.
Congratulations to two 2nd graders, Jacob O'Neill and Jinal Shah, for winning Madison Metro's Bus Lines poetry contest! Their original works will be published on Metro buses this fall. So cool!

This is your PTO
Today we are glad to introduce you to Carlie Craig, one of our grade level representatives (1st grade this year, kindergarten last year)She has two children: Elanor (1st grade) and Evie (4K).
Why did you join the PTO? I was a teacher before I became a full-time mom, so I knew how important it is for schools to have a solid PTO. As the saying goes, "Many hands make light work." Being a member of the PTO is also a great way parents can make their voices heard. We welcome all ideas! For me, the best part of being a member of the PTO is having the opportunity to be of service to all those who work hard day in and day out in order provide our children with the best learning experiences and safest learning environment possible.
What do you love most about Muir? Muir has such a great, diverse community of families, which I think is so beneficial to all of our children! Our Muir community does a fantastic job teaching students to celebrate, learn from, and respect the wonderful cultural differences of our Muir families.
What is your favorite memory of your elementary school days? Being chosen to participate in a statewide writer's workshop in both 5th and 6th grade. I loved creative writing, so this was magical to me!
What are some of your hobbies? I am a musician so I love playing, directing, and teaching music. I also enjoy seeing lots of different kinds of live music. Crafts, reading, gardening, meditating, and spending time with family and friends are some of my favorite things to do as well.
If you could wave a magic wand and get anything you wanted for our school community, what would it be? That would have to be air conditioning!

It's spring! Our teachers always have new ideas and needs for projects and supplies in their classrooms, especially now that the weather is nice again. Click HERE to make a classroom donation that will be greatly appreciated.
