Weekly Newsletter
August 24, 2020

We would like to give a very special welcome to all new students, as well as a warm "welcome back" to those returning to The University of Akron! We're so excited to have you with us this year.

We hope you've had a great summer and pray that each of you will have a smooth first week of classes, along with growth and success throughout the semester. The beginning of a new school year is always exciting!

This year, things are surely going to look different. But with faith and trust in God, we hope you'll find that RooCatholic truly is "a place to belong."

In this first email of a weekly series (though most won't be this long), you'll find announcements and helpful information about our student ministry, COVID-19 guidelines and new ways RooCatholic is working minister to the community of The University of Akron, even from afar.

Whether in person or online, we can't wait to see you!

With the peace of Christ,

The RooCatholic Leadership Team

The safety of our students is a top priority. This semester, we will be taking a number of steps that will help RooCatholic continue to minister to our community in these trying times. In accordance with University and diocesan guidelines, RooCatholic will be implementing the following measures:
  • Face masks or coverings must be worn at all RooCatholic events.
  • Most RooCatholic events will take place in the St. Bernard Social Hall (basement of the church) to allow for greater social distancing. Smaller events, such as small group meetings, will continue to take place in the Newman Center. The layouts of these areas have been modified in accordance with local and state guidelines.
  • All meeting spaces will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis. Hand sanitizer will be provided.
  • All gatherings will be limited to 10 people. To attend a RooCatholic event, you will first need to RSVP online to let us know you’re coming. RSVPs will be taken on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Unfortunately, homestyle dinners will not be served this semester. Boxed dinners will be provided by St. Bernard’s Hot Meals program on select Wednesdays, however.
  • We ask that you stay home if you’re sick. Any person with a temperature of 100.4°F or higher should refrain from public attendance.
  • Most events will be offered virtually as well. Much like your classes here at UA, RooCatholic will be implementing a "hybrid" model to its programming, allowing for an online alternative to in-person participation. This will include live streams, videos and other interactive ways to participate with our ministry online.
We know some of these guidelines might not be popular with everyone, but it's important to proceed with sacrifice and humility in taking these steps to keep our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ healthy and safe.

Why are we taking these measures? Where did we get these guidelines? You can find the guidelines here and here.
We're excited to roll out a brand new website this year, and we want you to check it out! comes fully loaded with Catholic modules and different ways to stay connected. Check back throughout the week as all the fun new features come to life!
