On Friday, August 3, Governor Kay Ivey announced the 200 schools selected as official Alabama Bicentennial Schools. Governor Ivey was joined at the announcement by superintendents, principals, teachers, students, and administrators from the selected schools along with legislators and other dignitaries from across the state. ALABAMA 200 Announces Fall 2018 Community Grant Cycle

Fall 2018 Community Grant applications are now open. The grants, $2500 each to communities and $5000 for counties, will be awarded until the final application deadline of Oct. 26, 2018. Grants are available to support community and county activities, events, and projects that commemorate the state’s 200th anniversary. Online applications are available at www.Alabama200.org.

Bicentennial PastPort App Now Available

The free, interactive mobile app for the Alabama Bicentennial PastPort, a guide to nearly 300 historical destinations in Alabama, is now available. The app is designed as a companion to the PastPort and contains detailed information for stamp sites, including contact information and addresses. The app also features historical content from the Encyclopedia of Alabama.

 
 
Wiregrass Museum of Art Launches  

Wiregrass Museum of Art Launches "Stories of the Wiregrass"

The Wiregrass Museum of Art will work with communities throughout the Wiregrass region to gather diverse stories with the goal of making them accessible to the general public. The project will include artist-led activities, including a portable darkroom from artists Jared Ragland and Cary Norton, and curriculum-based lesson plans related to the storytelling theme of the bicentennial commemoration.

ALABAMA 200 and Reach Out and Read–Alabama Announce Partnership

Reach Out and Read– Alabama, a program of the American Academy of Pediatrics, gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. The organization announced "Alabama, My Home Sweet Home" by Charles Ghigna as its selection for the 2019 Rx for Summer Reading Program.

Mobile Medical Museum Launches Exhibit, Lectures and Artwork  

Mobile Medical Museum Launches Exhibit, Lectures and Artwork

This fall, the Mobile Medical Museum continues its recently expanded programming schedule with a new special exhibit, three commissioned sculptures, and two guest lectures by distinguished medical historians. The new sculptures and exhibit are official bicentennial projects, and the museum will be offering curriculum-based tours and other public programs throughout the year to engage visitors with historical themes.

Bicentennial Bookshelf Program Embraces “Adventure” and “Alabama”

As part of the three-year bicentennial commemoration, The University of Alabama Center for Economic Development (UACED) is rolling out the Bicentennial Bookshelf program to schools within the Alabama Blackbelt. This new and exciting reading project is a collection of 13 books that are written about Alabama or by authors born and raised in Alabama.
