Colorado Gives Day is Tomorrow!

On Colorado Gives Day, High Plains Environmental Center (HPEC) is asking for donations of $75 so we can purchase 60 heirloom fruit trees to be planted in our orchard. Our goal is to raise $4,500 on Colorado Gives Day this year. Will you help us?

Northern Colorado was once a significant fruit growing region, but over the last century development has replaced orchards. By planting heirloom fruit trees and creating an orchard, HPEC is preserving and restoring this portion of our agricultural history.

These heirloom fruit trees, including apple, cherry, and plum, will be planted on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, with the help of volunteers. Varieties planted will include ‘Flower of Kent’ a scion of the original tree that Sir Isaac Newton sat under when postulating his theory of gravity, ‘Colorado Orange’ - a cultivar bred within our state, and saplings derived directly from a tree known to have been planted by Johnny Appleseed.

We invite you to come to our Grand Opening and Native Plant Sale on Saturday, May 13, 2017, where you can visit our new Educational Visitor Center, check out our gardens and Orchard, and buy some plants.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO REACH OUR GOAL.

Update on Construction

Construction of Phase One of the new High Plains Environmental Center is going well with our sidewalk, parking lot, and foundation going in just in the nick of time, ahead of winter storms. We’re just about to start going vertical!
*Registration is closed. We will be offering this class in 2017.*

WILDSCAPING AMBASSADOR TRAIN-THE-TRAINER WORKSHOP

Do you enjoy gardening? Want to promote native landscapes, so others too can enjoy the benefits of gardening for wildlife?

If you said yes, attend our ‘train-the-trainer’ workshop made possible by the partnerships between Audubon Rockies, Colorado Native Plant Society and High Plains Environmental Center. The workshop takes place on Monday, December 5 from 6:30-8:30 pm. We will engage and train volunteers on spreading the word about actively restoring natural habitat for birds, butterflies, and other pollinators by implementing water-wise and native gardens on our landscapes. Come enjoy meeting other fellow gardeners and learning the tools of the trade to deliver a presentation to your local garden center/nursery, garden clubs, community center, HOA’s and more on the importance of creating native plant gardens that not only create a welcome place for birds, but benefit the environment and our communities too!
