Full STREAM Ahead!
Catholic education is one of the greatest gifts the Diocese of Buffalo gives to Western New York; thanks to Upon This Rock, diocesan schools will be even better equipped to offer 21st century learning skills to its students. The STREAM Education Initiative promises to enhance the already excellent education provided by our Catholic schools and has begun supporting the future of Catholic education.
The initiative, which focuses on science, technology, religion, engineering, the arts, and math, promotes a higher level of critical thinking and a deeper understanding of content. This method promotes a very hands-on approach to education. Additionally, it stresses the importance of interdisciplinary skills, as content from a particular subject often times overlaps a different subject and allow a deeper understanding of both fields to take place.
“How we teach must reflect how students best learn,” explains Jean Comer, STREAM Education Initiative Coordinator, “It must reflect the world our students will move into. These continuous improvements and updates of programs reflect excellence in education.” STREAM was first implemented at ten pilot schools in the fall of 2014, while a second cohort with six additional schools joined the program last June.
The Diocese of Buffalo has experienced tremendous success with the initial implementation of the STREAM Initiative and will continue to partner with schools to fund this program. Upon This Rock will allocate $3 million to fund leadership and professional development, as well as essential technology upgrades.
