Moving the Plot Forward

A thorough read of Upon This Rock’s timeline will reveal that we are only still on the opening pages of a much longer story.  This fundraising, which has dominated the narrative – our journey to raising $100 million – for the better part of two years is simply a prologue.  The main focus of this story is the way these funds return to the community in order to strengthen our future.  We are excited to share with you, our compelled audience, that the next chapter of the campaign is finally unfolding, as the second round of disbursement checks make their way to the parishes.
The Foundation for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, the organization that manages the generously donated funds, disburses funds every six months, on January 31 and July 31.  Any parish that has completed its campaign for at least 90 days prior to a disbursement date will receive a check with a portion of its 35% parish share.  This month, 62 parishes will receive checks to begin their individual improvements; the Pilot parishes and St. Joseph’s Cathedral were sent their first checks in July of 2016.
Last week we spoke to Msgr. Thomas Maloney at St. Amelia in Tonawanda, one of the parishes to receive a disbursement check this week.  He shared his parish’s inspired plans to use Upon This Rock funds for a new, state-of-the-art building to further foster discipleship within his community.  “People […] don’t join because they come to a church liturgy,” he said, “They join because of what happens after.  After Mass they have an opportunity to meet people, people reach out to them, and they do this over the period of weeks – three, four, five, six, eight, ten weeks – and then they feel that they belong here.  That’s when they register.  We don’t have a really good place for that kind of fellowship to take place.  So we want to erect a building where that can happen.”
We are excited to share more stories like this one in the coming weeks, as we speak to more pastors who are moving the plot forward in their stories as they receive disbursement checks on Together in Faith, the campaign’s monthly podcast.  Thank you as always for following our story as we build a stronger narrative for the Diocese of Buffalo.
