'Keeping it 100' in Lackawanna
Since our return from the holiday recess, many individuals, including priests, Ambassadors, volunteers, and our own Upon This Rock staff have been working hard in Block 4 parishes in order to reach the campaign’s goal. Their tireless efforts take many shapes – whether participating in a Commitment Weekend, making calls during a Phone-A-Thon, or simply taking the time to meet with a pastor about this initiative. This week those labors paid off in a special way at St. Anthony in Lackawanna, as the parish surpassed goal ahead of its 100th anniversary.
We spoke with Dcn. David Velasquez, Administrator at St. Anthony, who attributes all of his community’s success to the commitment of the parishioners. Dcn. Dave explained, “certainly it is a love decision from those who participated […] it's a proud yet humble feeling – reaching our goal and exceeding it.” St. Anthony will be using its parish share to establish a deferred maintenance fund for future renovations and upgrades to the campus. While there is not a definite plan in place for how these funds will be used, Dcn. Dave was heartened to hear his parishioners’ many suggestions during their one-on-one meetings. “I certainly realized,” he said, “how much our folks love their church and are supportive of the Diocese of Buffalo.”
Since St. Anthony has surpassed its campaign goal, 55% of any additional funds will go directly to the parish community. Dcn. Dave is especially excited as this will allow the parish to properly commemorate its 100th anniversary later this year. “As we prepare for our centennial celebration in May,” he added, “these funds can also help us make some needed upgrades.” With all of this recent success, the parish certainly has plenty to celebrate and be thankful for!
Congratulations to Dcn. Dave, the campaign volunteers, and all of the parishioners at St. Anthony – thank you for your tireless dedication to your community!
