A Bright Future in Olean!

Regular newsletter readers know that Commitment Weekends are one of the final steps in a parish’s campaign, when pastors speak during Mass to encourage all of their parishioners to participate in Upon This Rock.  With numerous Block 3 and 4 campaigns coming to an end, many parishes have been hosting these events and seeing great success.  In last week’s newsletter, we reported that St. Mary/St. Mark in Holley/Kendall as well as Ascension in Batavia surpassed their goals.  This week, we are happy to share that The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels is the latest parish to cross the finish line after its most recent Commitment Weekend!

In Olean, Fr. Gregory Dobson led his parish to surpass its combined Upon This Rock and Catholic Charities goal of $836,000!  Gifts were received from 225 families throughout The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, which were inspired to give thanks to Fr. Dobson’s vision for the church’s future.  With the returning funds, the parish will continue its restorations with the addition of an elevator and the refurbishment of pews.

This is not the biggest news of late to come out of this parish: back in February, Pope Francis signed a decree which established St. Mary of the Angels as a basilica!  This designation is a testament not only to the church’s architectural beauty and history, but also the vitality of the parish’s community and ministries.  When interviewed by The Buffalo News, Fr. Dobson shared, “This historic designation is the fulfillment of a dream for Father Edward Rengel who built our church more than 100 years ago.”

We want to congratulate everyone at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels – your many successes are reflective of your dedication to both your parish and your faith.  We look forward to seeing what else the future has in store for you!

A Prayer for Upon This Rock

Loving God, we come to You,
standing together in faith,
ready to realize the freshness of a bold endeavor,
as we look to the future of our Church.

Building up the Kingdom of God on earth is Your will and our privilege.
Bless our efforts with the energy and enthusiasm we need.

Jesus, our Redeemer,
encourage and guide us.
Open our hearts to be good stewards because of our love for You.

Holy Spirit, our Sanctifier,
empower us to carry out Your will for the Upon This Rock campaign.

May Your Goodness be upon us,
And give us success to the work of our hands and hearts.

We ask Your blessing now and always
through Christ Our Lord.

Amen!
