Isaac Bonisteel of New Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador, is 2016 McEuen scholar

Barry Becket, Elise Aylen and John Aylen, the selection committee of the McEuen Scholarship Foundation, met on April 29 to interview a short list of candidates for the 2016 scholarship. This year’s winner is Isaac Bonisteel, who is completing his last year at Pearson College in Victoria, BC. Isaac has been accepted into Medicine at St. Andrews as of September 5 of this year. He intends to return to New Harbour to practice Medicine subsequently.

On being told he’d won the scholarship, Isaac said he’d felt a great flood of emotions. “My heart rate practically doubled and an uncontainable smile formed on my lips. Over the past week I have had an opportunity to reflect on just how immense an opportunity I have been presented with, an opportunity that I am deeply thankful for and will cherish always.”

Isaac will bring an impressive set of skills and accomplishments to St. Andrews, including the highest marks possible in the International Baccalaureate Diploma. He impressed the selection committee with impeccable marks, outstanding leadership potential and participation in any number of extra-curricular activities including volunteer initiatives, provincial soccer, acting and playwriting, and the scuba diving program at Pearson.

Congratulations, Issac!

First John and Andrée Aylen Memorial Dinner held at the Rideau Club in Ottawa

On April 28, board members, the scholarship selection committee, special guests and friends of the Foundation gathered at the Rideau Club for the John and Andrée Aylen Memorial dinner, both of whom were instrumental in founding the scholarship and perpetuating the McEuen legacy. 2002 scholarship recipient Erica Corsi (née Hunt) and her husband Daniel were especially welcome guests. She and Daniel have three young children, and Erica is currently a pediatrician practicing in the Ottawa area.

All scholarship recipients will be invited to join us for the second annual John and Andrée Aylen dinner in 2017, in a city and location to be determined.

McEuen presents at Conference of Canadian Independent School Counsellors in Halifax

McEuen president John Aylen made a presentation on the McEuen Scholarship, the criteria for selection and the selection process at the National Conference for University Guidance Counsellors held at Dalhousie University in Halifax. The conference included some 80 counsellors at private schools across the country. Increasing awareness of the scholarship and understanding of its value and prestige are important objectives of the Foundation.

Meet Anne Weppler

Anne Weppler is the face—and the hands, brain and heart—behind the McEuen Scholarship Foundation. She is the first and only administrator of the foundation and the person who cheerfully responds to requests, cuts through red tape, coordinates applications, liaises with St. Andrews, provides information to school counsellors, makes sure scholar expenses get paid and otherwise makes running the McEuen Foundation look easy, which it is not. The McEuen Scholarship would simply not be possible without her.
