STUDENT ARTIST OF THE MONTH

We're way behind on recognizing our Student Artists of the Month from the fall/winter but we'll be catching up by recognizing a student each week in March.

RJR's SAM
January 2017

ELIZABETH MACMILLIAN

Nominating Teacher: Phil Benati

Arts Discipline: Photography

Grade: 12

GPA/QPA: 4.65

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part of doing photography is being able to experiment with my personal style and discover new possibilities while shooting and editing. I love trying to do something I’ve never done before and creating art that I really enjoy and identify with.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I hope to attend UNC Chapel Hill and I am considering going to the School of Media and Journalism to specialize in Photojournalism. I will most likely major in photography or another visual art and minor in business.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? I just recently received a Scholastics Gold Key for one of my photographs, which is an award I have been hoping to receive for three years now.

How will the arts influence your future career? Whether or not I become a professional photographer, I intend to continue doing photography for a long time and hopefully it will always play a large part in my life. I know I will always be greatly influenced by the art and artists in my community and I hope to integrate my artistic ability into whatever career I have in the future.

We're excited to share the great news of some award winners from RJR!  Please know that each and every one of you who interact with these students helps to make them who they are, informs their visions, impacts their ability to creatively respond to prompts and make art that is being recognized across the state.  Be sure to congratulate these students and their teachers.

Dance - Autumn Robinson won 1st place in Dance Choreography and Parker Burrows won 2nd place in Dance Choreography at the state level in the Reflections Contest.

Photography - Annabella Schmidt won 1st place at the state level for Photography in the Reflections Contest.

They will be honored (along with their art teachers) at a reception in Raleigh on April 22, from 2:00-4:00 and their entries will compete at the national level.

Chorus - the A Cappella group presented last week at Wake Forest for their Music Performance Adjudication and received STRAIGHT SUPERIORS with a 99 in sight singing.

Band - Isaac Cooper and Alston Harris for making the NC All State Honors Band.

Orchestra - Vivian Mayers, Wesley Patterson, Clare D'Alessio, Ben Smith, Logan Miller-Western Region Honors Orchestra.

Sung Girard - Western Region Rep Orchestra.

Piano and Guitar students will have a concert on March 30 in the auditorium.  They don't have competitions or organized awards since most schools do not offer these classes. Come out and support them for free!

These District Reflections Contest Winners were celebrated on Monday, March 13th: Kelsey Romney, Vivian Mayers, Parker Burrows, Autumn Robinson, Shayla Wilson, Chelsea Hignite, Sophie Phillips, Liam Baker, Zoe Ebbitt, Annabella Schmidt, Haley Sisson, Madeline Bennett, Miles Ledbetter, Cami Bender, Tatum Ward, Ari Puentes, Betsy Stanek, and Amelia Rhodes

Our visual artists continue to compete in the Scholastics Competition and Tessa Bennett's work "Teapot" is on exhibit in Raleigh as a Governor's Student Excellence Award Winner.

I am grateful that this school and this community support the whole student and recognize the importance of art/creativity as part of a comprehensive education!

ATHLETICS

Baseball: Demons lost a heartbreaker to Mount Tabor on Tuesday 6-4.  The two teams meet again tonight at 6:00 at Mount Tabor.

Golf: The team will play today at the North State Invitational in Kannapolis.  This is a two day event.  RJR won the 1st CPC match on Wednesday at our home course at Winston Lake.

Lacrosse: The Boys Lacrosse team lost to NW Guilford on Tuesday and the Girls team beat the Vikings in a blowout.  Both teams take on Mt Tabor tonight.  Boys at MT, girls at home at Deaton-Thompson.

Soccer: RJR defeated Mount Tabor on Monday 1-0 and High Point Central on Wednesday 2-0.  The team returns home on Monday to take on North Davidson.

Softball: A victory over North Forsyth on Monday was a spark for the Demons as they head into a tough stretch of conference games, including today at West Forsyth.

Tennis: The Demons defeated Glenn on Tuesday, but that win was sandwiched between two loses to Reagan and SW Guilford.  Two games vs. Parkland headline the schedule for next week.

Track: The track team had a number of good performances on Tuesday at North Davidson and hope that carries over to next week at a meet at Mount Tabor.
