Dean’s Message

During these past months, we have faced many challenges due to COVID-19. The College of Engineering & Computing (CEC), has notably contributed to helping our community through this pandemic. In response to the shortage of personal protective equipment for health workers treating patients during the coronavirus pandemic, CEC faculty and students supported the initiative to 3D-print non-disposable face shields for Baptist Health South Florida and first responder units. To date, CEC has printed more than 2,500 non-disposable face shields. In addition, assistant professor, Hadi Amini, created a dashboard to predict the number of cases and deaths from COVID-19. This toolset forecasts COVID-19 cases worldwide using data analytics.

Our faculty and researchers continue to excel. FIU's Robotics Academy was named one of the 40 finalists nationwide for a prestigious Igniting Innovation Award from the American Council for Technology and Industry Advisory Council. Our researchers adapted the Bitcoin's Lightning network to identify cybersecurity risks and others are developing solutions for smart city infrastructure. CEC also recognizes SUCCEED assistant professor, Alexandra Strong, for receiving an NSF grant to develop engineering instructional faculty at Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

Our student organizations have stayed connected and are hosting virtual coding workshops for the community. CEC students continue to showcase their skills and education by developing a virtual reality project for FIU first-year experience students and by earning internships and jobs at recognized corporations, such as Northrop Grumman and General Electric Aviation. Read about this and more in this issue of the Bulletin.
