Democrat Carlos Guillermo Smith raises $21,410 in first 30 days
Democratic Party chairman takes lead in early fundraising, unveils new endorsements
Orlando, FL - Florida House 49 candidate, Carlos Guillermo Smith, has filed the first fundraising report of his campaign according to the Division of Elections earning $21,410 from June 1st through June 30th, 2015.
The Orange County Democratic Executive Committee chairman and previous legislative aide to former Representatives Joe Saunders is a first time candidate for public office, vying to win the seat once held by Saunders, who endorsed Smith last month.
Smith’s early dominance in fundraising 16 months out from the 2016 general election continues the buzz and momentum behind his candidacy in the lead up to his official campaign kickoff set for Thursday, July 9th at 6:30p at the Abbey in Downtown Orlando. His June 1st announcement was instantly welcomed with praise and endorsements from a long list of progressive leaders and elected officials and captured statewide media attention. Dan Sweeney of the Sun-Sentinel wrote June 2nd, “Smith represents the Democrats' best chance to flip a seat in next year's election.”
New endorsements announced today include Orange County Tax Collector Scott Randolph, Orange County Clerk of the Courts Tiffany Moore Russell, and Orange County Property Appraiser Rick Singh.
Orange County Tax Collector Scott Randolph offered the following statement:
"Since serving as my legislative aide in the Florida House, Carlos has mastered the process of being an effective advocate in our state Capitol on the issues that voters care about the most. Not only will he be a great legislator and champion for his constituents, but leaders like Carlos are the future of the Democratic Party."
Carlos Guillermo Smith offered the following statement:
“The amount of support and enthusiasm we have seen this early towards our campaign tells us that our message is resonating. The everyday working families and students in House District 49 need someone from the community who has consistently fought for the issues most important to voters-- well-paid jobs, affordable healthcare and affordable college, and matters of social and economic justice. We need new voices who will govern this state in a responsible way, and I will be ready to do that on day one.”
A graduate of the University of Central Florida, Carlos Guillermo Smith is a proven fighter for our community's working families and students. His platform of job creation, fully funded public education, and social and economic justice reflects the values of everyday working Floridians. Carlos previously served the constituents of House District 49 as the legislative assistant to former Representative Joe Saunders and was elected Chairman of the Orange County Democratic Party in 2013.
