Flexibility – this is the focus of our January newsletter! We begin writing this from our impromptu 2-day stay in Dover, DE, thanks to getting stuck in Winter Storm Jonas! For these Floridians, the last 48 hours have been quite the driving adventure – pounding rain in South Carolina, 4 hours of ice in North Carolina, and 12 more hours of snow driving at only about 35 mph through Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. Needless to say, we were worn out and it has been a blessing in disguise to have a whole day to relax and play with the kids. Unfortunately, the storm caused all services at both churches we were intending to visit to be cancelled. But we are still able to make many connections on this northern trip to share the vision God has called us to in South Africa.
So we have had to be flexible! Sometimes the best-laid plans are changed, the proverbial curve-ball is indeed thrown. In times like these, when circumstances are out of our control, when weather is volatile, when food poisoning strikes (yes, this happened on the same trip), and we struggle to understand why, we are reminded that there is only One who is in control, only One who has it all together, and He always works for our good (Romans 8:28), regardless of what we think our good should be. We are reminded that our God works on a much higher level than we could possibly fathom. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9).
So we continue on, making connections and sharing the vision for Knysna! We are praising the Lord because although the services on Sunday were cancelled, we were able to flip around our schedule in such a way as to still meet with each individual family we planned to. God has so clearly had his hand on all of our travels this month, blessed us with safety and no mechanical issues through all of the over 6,000 miles travelled, providentially lined up connections we never would have dreamed of, strengthened old friendships, formed new ones, and spurred several more individuals and families to partner with us. After now three months of full-time support-raising, we are at 21% of our monthly budget and 32% of our initial expenses! We can do nothing but give glory to God!
We are now writing this section of the newsletter from just across the northern border high above the incomparable Niagara Falls. To see the majesty of God’s handiwork, hear the thundering of 85,000 cubic feet of water cascading over the edge every second, and feel the icy mist rising from 165 feet down in the gorge, is a humbling experience indeed. We are reminded that it is He who is in control of all things (even winter storms), He who directs our steps, and He who will ultimately provide the support for His vision in South Africa!
Below are some specific ways you can be praying for our family at this time. Be sure to check out our website (mellos4knysna.com) or our Facebook page (facebook.com/mellos4knysna) for details about the work the Lord has called us to and how you can get involved. We look forward to sharing in our next newsletter all that the Lord will do in the next month!
And remember, as our choir director loves to remind us, “Blessed are the flexible, for they shall never be bent out of shape!”
