Girls' Varsity Basketball

Girls' Varsity Basketball went 1-2 last week. Last Saturday, they defeated VES in Lynchburg by a score of 34-31. On Tuesday, they lost a competitive game 71-61 when they hosted Fredericksburg Christian. On Thursday, they lost to Division 1 powerhouse, St. Anne’s Belfield School. Their next game is at home on Thursday, hosting Trinity Christian.

Varsity Equestrian

The equestrian team went to Maryland again last weekend, to Full Moon Farm in Finksburg. It was another efficiently run show, much appreciated by all, as the polar vortex began moving in just as we finished up!

It turned out to be another big show results wise for Kat Doherty '21, who won her flat class and was second over fences. Salem Twiggs '20 was 4th over fences and 6th on the flat, and Cece Twiggs '22 was 6th in both her classes.

The team has a big weekend coming up. We co-host with Stonegate Stables on Saturday and compete at Madeira on Sunday.

Varsity Fencing

Fencing competed against the Gonzaga Epee team last weekend in a series of three-on-three teams and scoring first to 45. Each fencer faces each other on the other team in sequence.

The varsity team fenced well, starting off with a good lead thanks to Peter Toto ‘21 and his parries and counter attacks which took the opposing team off guard. This was followed up with the staunch and active style of Kevin Huang ‘19 to hold the middle bouts in which he tended to wear down the other team. However their varsity had a sub who was able to even the odds close to the end and finally a tense final bout started in even standing and Derek Pantel ‘21 closed out the bout with a victory by three points.

MA’s JV team had four fencers (three main and a sub). The team has a mixture of experienced and novice fencers and all of them did well. New fencer Max Thornton ‘23 had a rough start but rebounded later in the event and finished strong. Coco Chen ‘19, also a new fencer, was tentative at first, but revealed a ferocity which surprised her opponents. Colley Bell IV ’20 is experienced but has been out due to a fall injury, so he was captain of the JV for this event. He was tentative at first but was able to make a tremendous comeback at the end of the bout with a 9 point swing in one set. Forbes Condon ‘21 was the glue that held the JV together this bout. He scored 28 of the team's 45 points and ended the bout winning only by one point.

Next week we will fence Georgetown prep at home on the 7th and the foil team will have a chance to show their skills. Come out and support our fencers!

Varsity Swimming

This past weekend the Varsity Swim Team traveled to Manassas for the Seton Invitational swim meet to compete against several other teams.

Denise Loewinger '20 placed fifth in the 200 individual medley, while also placing tenth in the 100 breaststroke. Holiday Price '20 placed twenty-seventh in the 50 freestyle and seventeenth in the 100 breaststroke.

Meanwhile, Sef Metwally '19 placed twelfth in the 200 individual medley and nineteenth in the 100 breaststroke. Max McLaughlan '20 placed nineteenth in the 100 freestyle and seventh in the 100 backstroke. And Mark Yan '22 placed twenty-ninth in the 50 freestyle and twentieth in the 100 breaststroke.

While the Dragons only defeated one team (the girls defeated St. Michael the Archangel High School 30-0), most of our swimmers improved their times from the last meet and swam exceedingly well.

They will return to Manassas on February 2nd for their next meet.
