Dear Reader,
here's your latest newsletter on Platforms – brought to you by the awesome Platform Design Toolkit Team.

A call for Partners: exploring the new foundations for platforms & ecosystems thinking in the 21st century with a new White Paper
Be part of this new exciting project by supporting this edition.

On October 2016, Simone and the team released the Platform Design Toolkit 2.0 and the companion seminal Whitepaper, titled “From Business Modeling to Platform Design. How the Platform Design Toolkit can help organizations to craft shaping strategies to explore and transform markets, with the smaller investment required”.

That paper, sponsored by SWIFT’s Innotribe program, became a landmark of platform thinking: it was translated into five languages and, together with Platform Design Toolkit 2.0, totaled 40k downloads to date. This work has been instrumental to kickstart the field of Platform Design and generated a plethora of copycats and mimicking approaches in the market.

Now Boundaryless is looking for new Thought Leadership partners that want to support the edition of a new Whitepaper, set to put new foundations for platforms & ecosystems thinking in a changing world facing the wicked problems of the Anthropocene.

On one hand, new socio-economic and environmental risk factors creates a need for a broader recognition of the role that highly scalable strategies could have in tackling wicked problems. On the other hand, organizational models are catching up with the continuity between the inside and outside of an organization, and business model and organizational innovation are coalescing: new technologies such as blockchain and crypto, machine learning and data are opening new frontiers of design for ecosystem mobilization strategies.

If you're interested in becoming a Thought Leadership Partner by sponsoring the White Paper, please get in touch by answering this email.

The Radical Power of Ecosystems as Processes ↴
Bill Gurley explains how Internet Marketplaces Unlock Economic Wealth by creating Money Out of Nowhere (basing it on classical economic theories that evidently fail to cope with the world we live in). Good examples, but we need a new awareness of interdependence.
The Origins of the Modern Ecosystem ↴
This analysis of Google's early days by Haydn Shaughnessy points out the difference between building a 2-sided marketplace & mobilizing an ecosystem. "On the Horizon" a publication by Stowe Boyd on Ecosystemic Organizations is getting better by the day, follow closely!
How TikTok is rewriting the world
"How do you get people to engage? Apparently you just… show them things, and let artificial intelligence take notes.” This post from the New York Times is an essential read to see how far and in what scary direction the mass distractions of the attention economy can go.
The Platform Era unfolds
The Platform Era Unfolds” highlights a coming report from the MIT Platform Summit and links to an interview of Geoffrey Parker in the preview of a keynote address that he will give in September in Cambridge.
On Emergent Leadership
On Emergent Leadership, Stowe Boyd shares very interesting considerations on ecosystem driven entrepreneurial organizations, with three layers emerging: enterprising, enabling and architecture.
How Business Ecosystems Rise (and Often Fall)
Reeves and Jacobides summarize how to develop an ecosystem with an industrial approach: subsidize heavily at first, attract both sides of the market, evolve continuously (ILC Cycle). A complementary read, always from MIT Sloan, is this article focusing on German B2B Ecosystems and platform evolution factors.
Advantage Flywheels
This amazing post from Max Olson offers a truly interesting visual way to illustrate network effects through what he calls Advantage Flywheels. Surely we consider featuring this (simple) visualization into our methodology at #PDToolkit
How to build an ecosystem strategy
“Ecosystems are nonlinear and complex. So power emanates from the center" Greg Satell on Ecosystems. We must admit that we're increasingly uneasy with this narrative. We believe that the future of organizing is centerless and non-rivalrous: this is an existential evolution.

Utopia or Bust: designing a non self-terminating civilization ↴
Daniel Schmatenberger interviewed on Emerge by Daniel Thorston nicely builds on top of the recent podcast by Jordan Hall ("Deep Code") and it's a strong call to action for platform shapers to extend their scope to cover broader grounds in narrative building, psycho-technologies, and anti-rivalrous systems.

Political Systems in an age of complexity ↴
Systems Innovation released a short report plus a video on how Political Systems could ecolec) evolve: "We need to dramatically increase the capacity of human beings to act smart when they are in large groups, rather than increasing stupidly as they get into larger and larger groups".
