Happy Holidays from the Friends of the Library. We are very grateful to the community for another successful year. The continued donation of gently used books to the Book Cellar and the wonderful volunteers that serve by sorting, shelving and displaying the books have allowed us to continue to provide cultural and educational activities for the community.

“A book is a present you can open again and again.” Book Cellar books make terrific gifts. Stop by and visit us in the lower level of the library. While making a selection for someone else you might find a new read for yourself.

A wonderful way to give a lasting remembrance to a friend or family member is to make a donation in their name to the Friends of the Elk Rapids District Library. We will send an acknowledgement to the honored recipient. Your gift is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. The Friends happily welcomed new board members.
Serving on the board for 2017 are:

Chair: Susan Calkins

Vice Chair: Sharon Bacon

Treasurer: Nell Lockhart

Secretary: Judith Lewandowski

Fund Raising: Cathy Walle

Public Relations: Linda Smith Bell

Book Cellar: Terri Hogarth

Corresponding Secretary: Nancy Evans

“Good libraries create services, great libraries create communities." Please join the Friends in our commitment to create enhancement and enrichment for our community library.

Best Wishes for a Happy New Year.

Cranberry Scones
Cranberry Scones

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter, chilled and diced

  • 1 cup fresh cranberries, roughly chopped
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 grated zest of one orange
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 3/4 cup half-and-half cream
  • 1 egg

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. In a large bowl, stir together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate bowl, toss cranberries with sugar; add to flour mixture along with orange peel and nuts. Mix lightly.
  4. In another bowl, beat together cream and egg; slowly pour into dry ingredients, mixing with rubber scraper until dough forms. Knead dough 4 or 5 times, being careful not to over handle. Divide dough in half. Turn out onto lightly floured surface. Shape each half into a 6 inch circle. Cut each circle into 6 wedges. Place scones on lightly greased baking sheets.
  5. Bake in preheated oven until golden brown, about 20 minutes.
