Friends of the Library
January… a time for new beginnings and New Year’s resolutions. The Friends of the Elk Rapids District Library have two “resolutions” to suggest:

Resolve to join the Friends! An hour or two a week – or a month – can make a meaningful difference in our ability to meet the Library’s needs. You can serve on a committee, work in The Book Cellar, or help plan an event.

Make a financial gift. It is a great way to honor or remember a book-loving friend or family member, or to show your love of our Island House treasure.

That’s not been said a thousand times?
The new years come, the old years go,
We know we dream, we dream we know.

Soup's On!
Carrot Ginger Creme Soup

2 tablespoons canola oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 pounds carrots, diced or shredded
1 bay leaf
2 teaspoons ground ginger
4 cups vegetable broth
2 cups half-and-half
salt and pepper to taste

Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Cook and stir onion until translucent and tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in carrots, ginger, bay leaf and vegetable broth, and simmer for 20 minutes, or until carrots are tender. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Remove bay leaf and transfer to blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Return soup to pot and add half and half. Heat until warmed through. Season with salt and pepper and serve.
