Capacity Development at the UN World Data Forum | Jan 2017, Cape Town
Challenges in implementing the SDGs, increased data demands from all parts of society, new possibilities stemming from innovations in collecting, disseminating and using data – all of these developments seem to call for more than just incremental change in the way we build capacities. But how can we do it? Is there a need to profoundly change the way in which we approach capacity? This should be one of the main questions we can hope to answer in Cape Town at the 1st UN World Data Forum.

The Democratization of Data

A little more than a year ago, the international community endorsed the Sustainable Development Goals. While the goals reinforced attention to previously identified challenges in health, education, and sanitation, there were also new areas of focus brought forth, including a call for a “data revolution.” But what do we actually mean when we think of the data revolution in connection to social and economic development?

Doha Declaration on a Data Revolution
Recognising the significance of the Data Revolution for statistical follow-up and review of the 2030 Development Agenda, participants at the Arab Forum agreed upon a draft "Doha Declaration on a Data Revolution".
NSDS Guidelines for Subnational Statistics
Following the cross-regional forum "Shaping Subnational Statistical Systems to meet requirements of the SDGs", PARIS21 developed a set of NSDS guidelines to help countries co-ordinate statistical operations across various levels of government.
CPTM Strengthens Collaboration Between Data, Statistics and Financial Sectors
The Commonwealth Partnership for Technology Management (CPTM) has launched a new "data and statistics" initiative that brings together national statistics offices and central banks.
