We just finished a fun and exciting summer camp with many of our LASER kids! Some of the highlights include Tokyo Steakhouse, Henry Moses Aquatics Center, a boat trip on Lake Washington, and a visit from some Pirates on site at Bryant. Our summer went by so quick!
LASER has a lot of fun activities planned for this school year and we are so excited to have your kids back with us. We have some new staff joining us at both sites and they are all bringing a fun energy to LASER. Welcome back and let’s get this year off to a great start!
Dear LASER Parents,

I would like to invite you to join our Tea and Pastry event for Oct.-Dec. 2017. I have had the opportunity to know many of you and would like to get to know more parents and build stronger relationships with our parent population in this new academic year. With this goal, please join us to enjoy some tea and pastry at pick up time on the dates below, provide any thoughts and feedback, or just chat! Here is the schedule for the Tea and Pastry event:

Second Tuesday of the Month (Oct 10, Nov 14, Dec 12)
5-6pm, in the main LASER portable room

I’m looking forward to seeing you!

Manna Ghandi
Executive Director

Welcome back DJ! DJ was at Laurelhurst in the past as a Lead Counselor and worked at Bryant site as a Site Lead. Please join us in welcoming her back to Laurelhurst as our Site Coordinator.
Here’s a little bit about DJ:
I was born and raised in Seattle, WA.  I’m currently attending NSC in the evenings, working on my WA State Stackable Certificate in Early Childhood Education.  I love working with the kids at LASER and seeing things “anew” through their eyes and sharing in the excitement of their discoveries.  Currently I live in Mountlake Terrace with two black pugs, Guido and Bubba.  I enjoy knitting and reading. My children Davina, Will and I are all Laurelhurst Alumni… Davina and Will are also LASER Laurelhurst Alumni.
LASER has created a new position called Counselor II, for providing better leadership for each group and also for creating growth opportunities for our staff. Counselor IIs master the skills of being a role model counselor and are capable of taking more leadership and planning responsibilities.  Meet our Counselor IIs:
Monteze Hodge
Hello! My name is Monteze and this is my fifth year at LASER. Last year I was working at Bryant, but this school year I’ll be at Laurelhurst. I’m excited to meet and spend time with all the children at this site. I have been working with kids for eight years now and I hope to continue in the future! I have a Bachelor’s degree in Social Welfare and I’m hoping to pursue a Graduate degree in Social Work so that I can find a career as a School Social Worker. In my spare time I love to read, play my banjo, and snuggle with my two kitties.
Phillip Tomaschke
My name is Phillip and this year I am the Counselor II for the 4th and 5th graders here at Laurelhurst. I have been working at LASER since I moved to Washington about 2 years ago, and have had the pleasure of working with all the different age groups here at Laurelhurst. When I’m not at LASER, you can probably find me teaching my Pre-K class at the community center, studying Biology, or taking care of my many, many pets. I am so excited to hang out and meet all of the new LASER kids this year!
Marisa Bottolfson
I am from Fullerton, California and have been in Seattle for the last 3 years.   I have worked in tutoring and childcare for the last decade and I love working with students and mentoring our future leaders!  Aside from LASER, I am attending school to finish my degree in Public Health and Statistics. I love being outside, sports and elephants.
Muamer Hrustic
Hello, my name is Muamer and this is my first year at LASER. Well, this is my first real job, and it’s been great so far. I have been working with kids for almost 11 years and I am very excited to meet new kids. I recently graduated high school and I am going to attend my first fall quarter at Edmonds Community College. In my free time, I love to play basketball and listen to music.

“Who’s on first?” A group of LASER boys gather together on a base. This was during our first early release day on a trip to the Laurelhurst Park.
This year, Seattle Public Schools changed the bell times at most elementary schools. The other big change is that every Wednesday, there will be a 75 minute early dismissal. For all you LASER families that have a spot on Wednesdays we’ve got you covered! We run our program from when school is out at 1:10pm to our regular closing time at 6:30pm. For everyone else, please don’t forget about the early release.
We have a monthly recognition system called Star Kid of the Month.  A Star Kid is someone who goes above and beyond with their behavior while being respectful and helpful to all.  There is one child chosen each month from each room.  At the end of the year we choose a Star Kid of the Year from the children who have won Star Kid of the Month. We reward  Star Kids of the Month with a certificate and a $10 gift card and the Star Kid of the Year receives a $50 gift card.

Our New Class Pets

Meet Slammer and Sonja, our new class pets (Names were chosen by LASER Students). Slammer and Sonja are Green Anole Lizards. They are here for the kids to look at (not to touch), stop by, and check them out. We are also planning to create research projects and activities around them.

LASER Scholarship

LASER is committed to making our programs affordable.  We realize there may be circumstances where payment of the entire fee is a hardship.  We strive to make our programs available to as many children as possible, given our available and limited resources. To assist families in need, LASER offers scholarships based on available funds and eligibility criteria. Please contact us if you are interested to learn more.
