Spring, it is in the details.
It is the light, that slips and slides and even barges in. The ground, so sullen for winter, now open for a thousand tasks. And even before the dawn, the birds are now busy with their sounds of what must be and what must happen.

A few things that seemed appropriate.

Living in Nature : Contemporary Houses in the Natural World
Phaidon, London, 256pp. 2021, cloth, $50.

18 houses for AIR, 12 for EARTH, 10 for FIRE and 14 for WATER, from all over this land and world. From Vietnam to Finland, from Olson Kundig in Kona to a Tulum treehouse, all in lovely color photos. And in each case, nature is not the backdrop, it is the houses that are showing respect.
monk : Light and Shadow on the Philosopher’s Path
Yoshihiro Imani, Phaidon, 240pp, cloth , $50.

A spring title, if ever there might be, but that might only get to the steps. This is the book they never do, of the fourteen-seat Kyoto restaurant that is on the cherry blossom-lined Philosopher’s Path. It is the stories of farmers and ingredients, of seasons and menus, all told in beautiful photography, page after page of still-lifted glory and honor in cooking and food. It is the cooking of blossom and fire, of color and moisture, all over time.

There are recipes for each, but first, you have some quiet walking to do.

Tradio Plastic Fountain Pen
Craft Design Technology / Pentel, Tokyo, black ink refillable, $10.
We are always out of this pen. Not for lack of affection, it simply takes some attention to bring it in from Japan. I have always imagined it was a secret, how brilliantly it writes. It is not a fountain pen, except that it has a slightly soft beveled tip. Once, it might have been called a sign pen. I use it to sign, to quickly sketch, to make a note. The flexible plastic nib allows variation of line widths but holds a single line when writing. The plastic color is a traditional Japanese dark green, Kuro Midori.

When people began buying it in multiples here, I realized this pen was no longer a great secret. Just as well. We shall always carry it, proudly.
Japanese Note Block
7"x7" x 1.8" Blank Cream Paper, 350 sheets, glue bound, $34, wrapped.

This is the perfect note block- 350 sheets between sturdy board cover, layered paper, like a Napoleon cake. Each sheet of the premium paper can be cleanly taken. It sits alone, a lovely, substantial piece. Comes in mulberry and black.
Drehgriffel, twist action ballpoint pen
Leuchtturm, aluminum and brass, $24.95.
We have no other pen like this, a lovely stubborn ballpoint, that opens from the top with a twist. It is a pen that was on the desks of the 1920s. It has weight, hexagonal barrel, a slight deco turn, and a clear sense of place.

All available at the shop or to ship.
