Summer 2021

For the moment, there are more lesses and fewer mores.

It is a long march out of medievalism. There are plenty of fools by the roadside, the debris of progress.

Stay on the trail, it will be a freeway soon enough, the road to repair and to renaissance. It has schools and science, sense and art. The start to fall, to bring in the new sets, the cooler air and the later harvest.

We need the old and we need the new. The best of.

The Caran d' Ache 849 Ballpoint pen

This is the pen we have celebrated for forty years, trusty, tough, long lasting, metal body. We have many colors but shown here the two most popular, the matte black and the yellow.
The Caran d'Ache Paul Smith Ballpoint
Limited edition, comes in own metal case, $54
This is their traditional ballpoint, fussed up a bit by the wonderful Paul Smith, in stripes and handsome case. The piece is no longer in production, we have a half dozen left if you need one.
Catalog
Charlotte Perriand : The Modern Life
284 pp, London 2021, cloth $35
The superb exhibition catalog to the Perriand show at the Design Museum London. Perriand - who worked with, for, beside, and in contrast to Corbusier, Leger, Picasso, Prouve - is a wonderful soul of inspiration and purpose.

She presented, and spoke often, of " the resonance of things together" - everything that has gone before and everything that we make ourselves, of this day.
Six authors - Benton, Barsac, Sparke, Adamson, Cherruet and Hall - explore her notebooks and her furniture, her journeys and her theories. Perriand met and worked with Yanagi in Japan, in the months before Pearl Harbor. In the 1960s, she worked with Lina Bo Bardi in Brazil.

Perriand had a contract with the furniture manufacturer Thonet, for her tubular steel pieces, only to discover that Thonet thought the pieces a dangerous rival to their bent wood process and never intended to produce them widely.

The stories in time.
GIO PONTI, XL, Limited Edition
Salvatore Licitra, Stefano Casciani, Lisa Ponti, boxed, 5,000 numbered copies, 2021 May, 14.2" x 14.2", 14 lbs, cloth $250.
( our copies begin at edition #3057 of 5,000, printed and bound in Italy)
"Maybe Italy is destined to clarify which factors of modern life we need to embrace in order to salvage our last sense of beauty"

Now, finally, it can be said, and shown, and felt, the wonderful detail and spirit of the Gio Ponti work. The playful intent, the intensive playfulness, the brilliance of a single chair.
In its size, and scale, this is an immersion into Ponti, his entire life, 1891-1979. from the Pirelli Tower model and the Italian Cultural Institute, to his office, to the drawings and textile design, to his life.

( We have received (4) more copies of this masterwork. I did not believe we would have a second shipment. We sold our first order in three days.)
Not every designer would be best served by a physically enormous volume on their life and work. You must, in many senses, take up an awful lot of room first to even qualify. And then there must be a sense that people would want to have so much of one person. Ponti is such a person.
To store the wood.
