TO THE SWEET

TASKS OF SUMMER

There will be time, and temperature, for harder tasks. Summer is the challenge to enjoy, to sit with, to pause, to see. It is the feeling of things and the hope of some repair. At its best, it is a homecoming to a fundamental and primitive optimism.

NEW TO THE SHOP

Siza : Imagining the Evident
2021, Lisboa, 154 pp, 6"x8 1/2" linen cover, $40.
First English edition of a lovely book from Alvaro Siza, his own observations of his projects, of his struggles, of his decisions.

"To repeat is never to repeat"
"The obsession of originality is an unrefined and rudimentary process"

The text is accompanied by drawings from Siza's notebooks, an obstinate presence in the architect's particular way of working.

AV Monographs 230 : Ensamble Studio: Structures and Experience
110 pp, Porto, paper, $52.
There will be several new books on Ensamble. This is the newest, a very good presentation of their range and force, from the Truffle of stone, in Spain to the Brookline House Cyclopean near MIT, from the petrified River at Cooper Hewitt to the vast Montana landscape of the Tippet Rise Art Center. From strict campus to utter primitive.

Drehgriffel Nr. 1 - Gel Ink, Leuchtturm
Milled Aluminum and Brass, boxed, assorted colors, Germany, $25.
Black ink, ceramic ball bearing, desk pen, of some weight, opens at the top with a twist, 0.5 stroke. This is a pen that stays put, that holds a desk, that loves to work.

TOYO T-190 Mini Stackable Toolbox
4"x7 1/2 x 2", Japanese steel, dimpled for stacking, $28.
For a certain precision, this is a brilliant resolve - each steel box its own, in colors, done. Proportioned, powder-coated, and pressed from a single plate of steel. A quiet order.

FLOS OBLIQUE - Table Lamp from Italy
by Vincent van Duysen. 2021, anthracite color, boxed , $395.
A simple, brilliant minimal design, LED powered, to dim on its own switch. It is a task light for one, in pure form. There is a USB port at the back of the base for charging your other tools and to keep any clutter out. Other colors soon, this is the start.

Civilizing Terrains: Mountains, Mounds and Mesas
William Morrish, 1989, original edition, 17"x11" spiral bound, $275.
We have a single copy of this remarkable book, long out of print in its original exceptional edition.  And rarely in physically good shape if you do find one. The book came from the Design Center for American Urban Landscape in Minneapolis.

It is a brilliant book - as well, it is an example of a brilliant book, a moment of passion and craft, of knowledge and care and intuition. It is why there are books and always shall be - nothing else carries such passion so well.

When someone asks, what kind of a book should we do, I always say, do one that you intend to keep forever.
