It's Groundwater Awareness Week!

March 6-12, 2016, is Groundwater Awareness week!

Abundant, high quality, low-cost groundwater resources are fundamental to the long-term growth and vitality of our nation, yet this most important resource is often overlooked, if not neglected.
Attention to the protection and management of groundwater has consistently lagged behind that given to surface waters, meaning that historic and current water resource laws and policies deal primarily with the protection and management of our more visible lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

The GWPC Groundwater Report to the Nation is a great resource that highlights some of the more prevalent threats to groundwater, shares success stories, and makes recommendations for improved groundwater protection and awareness.

Visit the GWPC Groundwater Awareness page on our Web site to view this report, along with other resources and outreach materials from the GWPC and the National Groundwater Association (NGWA) for use in educating the public about the importance of groundwater.

States Forming Natural Gas Storage Work Group

Work Group will examine regulatory regimens to ensure public safety and environmental protection

State oil and gas regulatory agencies have partnered with the GWPC and the Interstate Oil & Gas Compact Commission to proactively address natural gas storage facilities and state regulations by forming a work group to recognize aging infrastructure concerns, identify technological advancements and determine the regulatory challenges.

This effort will be coordinated through the States First Initiative, led by GWPC and IOGCC, which will organize a work group consisting primarily of state regulators from across the country and will include technical advisory experts from academia, industry, non-profit organizations and federal agencies.

The Natural Gas Storage work group plans to provide current solutions, guidelines and other regulatory examples when overseeing the construction, operation, safety and abandonment of storage facilities.
