Make Gratitude a Part of Each Day

Did you know that the word thanksgiving is an action word that means "the act of giving thanks"?

While gratitude should be practiced every month of the year, I believe November is a particularly important time to make gratitude a priority. Today, in the spirit of giving thanks, I express my gratefulness for you.

We are thankful for the dedicated network of partners who share our belief that every person, when given the resources and support, must be prepared for the inevitable moment when they are called upon to build, repair and restore their community.

Because of you and our community of supporters, Building Resilient Communities (BRC) is one of our region's most comprehensive and practical emergency preparedness organizations. Your support allows BRC to deliver every one of our programs and services with passion and pride, no matter the challenges we encounter.

Thanksgiving is a perfect opportunity to not just share but demonstrate gratitude. Too often when Thanksgiving Day is over, the act of expressing gratitude is left on the table. Research shows that expressing gratitude can improve your well-being. Affirming the goodness in our own lives and recognizing the sources of goodness around us breathes new life into us. Showing gratitude recharges and rejuvenates us.

As we pause and reflect on all we have to be thankful for, I am deeply grateful for you and your steadfast partnership with Building Resilient Communities. May this month and every day be filled with joy and gratitude for you and your loved ones. And from all of us at Building Resilient Communities, Happy Thanksgiving! In safety and gratitude, Debra

Make Your Thanksgiving a Safe Celebration

Thanksgiving will soon be here! While the holiday seasons are filled with festive celebrations, holiday lights, and winter greens, they also present safety and fire risks that can quickly turn this festive time of year into a devastating one.

According to a report from State Farm Insurance, Thanksgiving is the number one day of the year for cooking fires. The U.S. Fire Department confirms that more than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day. Preparing deep-fried turkeys using a turkey fryer, is the cause of approximately five deaths, 50 injuries, and the destruction of 900 homes and more than $15 million in property damage every year.

Building Resilient Communities continues to educate the public about potential fire risks during the holidays, offering resources to help everyone enjoy a safe holiday season. As you prepare your holiday schedule and organize your family feast, remember that by following a few simple safety tips, you can enjoy time with your loved ones and keep yourself and your family safe from fire.

For many families, cooking and baking are at the heart of Thanksgiving preparations. Kitchen safety is critical during busy holidays when more people might be working in the kitchen to prepare a large meal. But for casual cooks and experienced chefs alike, the kitchen presents more hazards than imagined.

Many of our BRC friends reside in high-risk fire areas. When there is a high risk of a wildfire, Southern California Edison (SCE) may temporarily shut off power to customers to prevent an electric system from becoming the source of ignition. Turning off power is not something SCE takes lightly. Public Safety Power Shutoff events are one of the ways SCE can better ensure the safety of the public.

What is a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event and how can we stay prepared?

SCE is dedicated to keeping customers and employees safe and encourages everyone to be prepared for an outage or emergency. Preparing for an outage is easier than you think. Stocking up on a few supplies and planning can help you stay safe and comfortable.
