MERRY CHRISTMAS
FROM NHS R&D NORTH WEST

NHS R&D North West would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a fabulous New Year!

We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to you all for your continued support throughout 2021.

We've had a busy year so far, check out what we've been up to and what's to come in 2022!

Our new CEO!
As you may have seen over the past few months, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Amanda Craig as our new Chief Executive Officer (Designate) from 1st December, 2021. Amanda has been appointed following a rigorous and innovative recruitment process called “Bridge to the New”, led by the current CEO Professor Stuart Eglin and supported by Health Education England (NW) and the Northern Care Alliance.
Professor Eglin is to transition to the role of Chief Explorer within the organisation. Amanda has been welcomed to the team with open arms and we look forward to lots of exciting things to come! Click here to read more.
North West England Nurse, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional Research Capability and Capacity Strategy 2021 -24
In May of this year, we launched a new Nursing, Midwifery & Allied Health Professionals (NMAHP) Strategy. This is a regional roadmap launched to recognise the value of nurses, midwives and allied health professionals as critical to effective health and social care research.
Sponsored by Health Education England North West (HEE), the region’s two Clinical Research Networks (CRNs) from North West Coast and Greater Manchester and led by the NHS Research & Development Team (NHS R&D NW), the roadmap shows how health and social care organisations can support their practitioners to grow their skills in the area of research and contribute directly to enhancing care offered to patients and service users. Exhibition of Excellence (North West)
The Strategic Implementation Group has commissioned a virtual Exhibition of Excellence (NW) to take place online in March 2022. The Exhibition will be an opportunity to showcase the research activity currently being undertaken across the region and the impact that it is having on the quality of services for patients and service users
It will focus very much on the researcher’s journey from initial interest in practitioner research through the complete research career pathway.   Expressions of Interest for submission of projects will be advertised shortly.  Watch this space!

HEE/NIHR ICA Bridging Scheme
Despite most of the country being in lockdown NHS R&D NW continued to support early career researchers through the bridging scheme.  We recruited to the 3rd cohort and the programme was adapted to be delivered online.
As COVID restrictions were relaxed we were able to bring the awardees together in a face-2-face setting for their final workshop in September.  A total of 14 awardees passed through the programme early 2021 including 2 funded by the HSC R&D Division in Northern Ireland.  The 4th cohort has now been recruited to and commenced in November 2021 with 12 pre doc and 3 post doc awardees.  The scheme is going from strength to strength as awardees are successful in obtaining doctoral fellowships.  To learn more about the bridging scheme please click here

HEE/NIHR Internship for the North West
2021 has seen the return of the HEE/NIHR Internship for the North West to NHS R&D North West.  Applications have now closed for this round and these will be reviewed in the New Year.  The scheme is due to start in March 2022 with the first of three 2-day residentials.  Information on the internship can be found here
Early Career Researcher Pathway Programme
This year we received funding from the NIHR CRN NWC to go ahead with another cohort of our Early Career Researcher Pathway Programme which was great news!
This is a 12 month programme with 30 individuals who are interested in kick-starting their research career. We started the programme with an action-packed residential in Lancaster. We cannot wait to see what happens over the next 12 months! To see what we get up to, check out the hashtag on twitter #ECRPathway21

The programme is a 20 credit masters level unit of study validated by the University of Liverpool
Provocation Series
We have been working in partnership with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the University of Liverpool to bring a brand new series to you this year - The Provocation Series, which launched in July.
The 'provocation' approach is partly about taking people outside of their comfort zone to explore research fields that are quite different from their own areas of expertise and to see how this might challenge us to think about our work in new ways. To find out more please contact Jo Simpson by clicking here
NIHR Incubator Film Series
We are super excited to announce that we have just received the go ahead to produce four films in collaboration with the NIHR Nursing and Midwifery Incubator.
These short films will be show-casing individual nurses and midwives who have successfully received an NIHR research fellowship and are pursuing clinical academic careers. These films will be designed to promote clinical academic careers and engage nurses and midwives in research. Social Care Internship Pilot Scheme
In early 2022, we will be launching a new Social Care/Social Work Internship Pilot Scheme.  The programme will align with the essential elements of the NIHR School for Social Care Research current mission and in particular its commitment to building and strengthening adult social care research capacity.
It will provide an opportunity for social care practitioners to begin to understand and access applied health and social care researcher development, in effect enabling participants to ‘dip their toes’ into the social care research world.   Indicative content for the programme will include; research capability, personal effectiveness, research governance, creativity in research communication & dissemination, participation in communities of practice.
