AFLC Evangelism & Discipleship
September 22, 2020
It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy. How great are your works, O LORD! ~Psalm 92:1-5

This week I had the chance to get together with my seminary classmate and celebrate the 25th anniversary of our ordination, and what a special time it was! Not just because of the beauty of the landscape along the St. Croix River or the lovely lunchtime cruise we shared with our wives, but it was an encouragement to recount all the ways the Lord has blessed our lives over the last 25 years, to share in the words of the psalmist, “For You, O LORD, have made me glad by what You have done, I will sing for joy at the works of Your hands. How great are Your works, O LORD!” It was amazing to me how quickly our time went by as we shared the stories of our blessings and struggles in life and ministry. How my heart was lifted as we were able to point again and again to God’s faithfulness upon our lives!

I don’t know all that you are facing today, but I know that in times like these, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the strife and struggles in this world. I’d like to offer this suggestion: take the time, in the very near future, even if it’s just a few minutes, to list examples of God’s faithfulness and blessing upon your life and family. I believe you will not only be amazed at all that God has done in your past, but also encouraged to face whatever may come in the days ahead!

In His Love,
Pastor Randy Nelson
What is the Ministry Focus of AFLC Evangelism and Discipleship?

As the new director of this ministry, I feel that it is important to be clear about what I see as our primary job, and that is to serve, support, encourage and assist our AFLC churches and pastors in doing evangelism and discipleship in their own communities.  As we wrap up our promotion month I want to make you aware of some of the resources that we have put together to help to flesh out what the work of AFLC Evangelism and Discipleship looks like.  Here is a link to our website that has a short video as well as bulletin inserts that I would invite you to take a look at:

If you have further questions or suggestions, I would love to hear from you at randy.nelson@aflc.org. Thanks.

Jail Ministry Book is Progressing

We are excited about the ongoing work of partnering with Pastor Scott Stroud and his new book on developing a jail ministry in the local church. If you would like to help financially support the production of this new book, you can donate at https://www.aflc.org/evangelism/donate-2/ and select designation: PRISON MINISTRY BOOK PROJECT.

Jail Ministry Event

On Tuesday, October 20th, a ministry called Jail Chaplains (Fargo, ND) is hosting “A Story to Tell” which is a virtual event with a small live studio audience. Pastor Scott Stroud will be telling his story, using some of the chapter titles from his book, “Get Out for Good,” and weaving them into his presentation on how Jail Chaplains is encouraging men and women to engage in the activities Scott found helped keep him out of the correctional system for good. I would encourage you to visit their website at https://one.bidpal.net/astorytotell/welcome for more details.
We are thankful that as the fall begins, most of our congregations are returning to in-person worship, using the recommended social distancing guidelines. I know it is important for the local congregation to be physically together, as it is possible, and we are praying for you, as well as for those parts of the body who aren’t able to do so because of health concerns. We are praying that a day is coming soon when those concerns will be behind us.

In the meantime, we are thankful for invitations to come to visit churches and conferences in Brainerd, Mankato, and Greenbush, Minnesota in the coming weeks.  If you would like us to visit your congregation to share about the work of Evangelism and Discipleship, or even just to bring a message from God’s Word, Pastor Nelson is available to do that. Please call 763-412-2021 or email him at randy.nelson@aflc.org and he will be glad to coordinate a visit.

Thank you again for your faithfulness in supporting this ministry with your prayers and financial support. While we have fallen behind, it has been such a blessing to hear your words and notes of support along with your generous gifts during this promotion month. We are praying for you and we appreciate your partnership in bringing evangelism and discipleship to our AFLC congregations and their communities, any way we can.

With you in this mission,
Pastor Randy Nelson
