2022 was a year of exciting re-openings and frustrating setbacks. After the longest shutdown of any country in the world, Uganda’s schools finally reopened earlier this year and all of our sponsored students are back in the classroom. Happily, we are hearing from many teachers that our students are showing a much smaller “learning gap” from the shutdown thanks to the in-home tutoring that GUW was able to provide.
On the heels of Covid, Ugandan families have been hit hard by inflation, making it difficult to purchase even basic needs. GUW is helping by providing training and equipment to raise household incomes. After receiving GUW assistance, the Kirinya Beemasters Co-op members increased their honey production by 300%! More recently, multiple “kitchen gardening” workshops have been held with community groups, teaching them about healthy eating while also offering them a path for additional income by selling new produce.
And all year, our St. John’s Kayoro Health Center continued to be a lifeline of health and hope for the community. The clinic and its outreach programs were invaluable in teaching people about Covid transmission and safety, treating symptoms, and eventually distributing vaccines as a regional site chosen by the Ugandan government. This on top of delivering 378 healthy babies and providing over 29,000 individual medical treatments since October 2021!
We have accomplished so much, but there is always much more to do. There are more children who lack educational opportunities, more would-be businesspeople who need training, and more community cooperatives who seek the resources to become successful and self-sustaining.
