Harbeth 40th Anniversary!
Countdown to January 2017
|
Welcome to our September newsletter
The end of September has seen the beginning of autumn here in the UK. Time to break out the hats and scarves and embrace dark evenings, a perfect incentive to stay home and enjoy your music collection I'd say!
The Harbeth UK team have been making progress on plans for our 40th anniversary year, part of which is the launch of our new website - watch this space.
Last weekend our Benelux distributor for Harbeth, Audio Ingang, had a big presence at the
X-fi Audioshow in the Netherlands, showcasing the P3ESR, whilst the M40.2 was praised by Paul Seydor in his T.H.E. Show Newport report in the October issue of The Absolute Sound.
This month, we speak to Andy Thomas of Progrotech - a Harbeth user for fifteen years, who offers therapeutic music sessions to those with learning difficulties. We also feature, after a fantastic suggestion from a subscriber, a new section for Harbeth owners. If you'd like to feature in a future issue, please contact us! Read on to find out more

Progrotech - Fifteen years of using Harbeth
encouraging those with disabilities to make music
Andy Thomas of Progrotech offers therapeutic music sessions to those with learning difficulties (Down’s syndrome, dementia, autism) who enjoy singing and playing along to music.
Using colourful synths and detailed control panels with tactile knobs, makes it easier and more pleasant for Andy's students to engage with and create music.
"Music is ideal for gaining people's attention and spirit, with 3 metre wide HD karaoke projections (when required) or singing along with a Cubase 24 track copy of Bohemian Rhapsody making the individual feel like a star!"

Andy Thomas, Progrotech
Andy, a former session musician and synthesizer programmer specialising in wavetable synthesis and early sampling technology, has been using the HHB Circle 5 monitors, designed by Alan Shaw nearly twenty years ago, for the last fifteen years with great pleasure. The HHB Circle series (shown above) were built to last. In fact they are so beloved that users will trust nothing else. They have also proved to be popular with BBC Wales Education, guitarist/composer Dylan Fowler, Stefano Giaccone, Geoff Downes (keyboards – Buggles, ASIA, YES).
Thank you for sharing your story with us Andy! If you'd like to know more, please visit the Progrotech website. |
Harbeth in the press
High praise for the M40.2 in The Absolute Sound
magazine features a show report on
T.H.E. Show Newport, which took place in June
2016.
We were delighted to see the M40.2s featured as
one of Paul Seydor's show highlights -
"As always with Harbeth at these shows, the
sound was a haven of relaxed and peaceable
musicality surrounded by way too much din.
I have the Harbeths in house for review, and they
are stellar."
We look forward to the review in a future issue of
the magazine.

In your words
Harbeth owners speak
This month we introduce our new feature, In your words, in which we will highlight one customer on alternate months from around the world. This month's contributor is Super HL5plus owner, Bruce Martin.
"I owned a pair of Harbeth Mk ll in the 80s and earlier this year I walked into Son Ideal on Bishop Street in Montreal, who had a pair of the Super HL5plus hooked up. I sat down and listened to them for well over an hour and couldn’t believe my ears. Son Ideal lent me a pair of Super HL5s for a long weekend and I was sold.
A few months later I bought a pair of Rosewood HL5Plus and I gave my ProAc Response D25’s to my son as a wedding present; by the way they are still an excellent speaker but not as warm with the deep wide soundstage of the HL5s. My sound system is comprised of the following:
Bryston 4B SST amplifier
Bryston BP25 preamp
McIntosh MCD 550 SACD player
Bluesound Node 2 with Tidal HiFi subscription waiting anxiously for MQA
Audioquest Rocket 44 speaker cables and Audioquest Jaguar component cables
Luxman T-88V Tuner
Standesign speaker stands

Bruce Martin, Harbeth owner
I listen to a lot of Classical Music (60%) and the rest divided between rock, R&B, popular and some jazz. When I had the speakers for the test weekend I was listening to Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Neil Young’s Harvest moon that sealed the deal... the clarity and warmth was amazing.
Son Ideal also lent me a USB key for the Node 2 which was loaded with about 30 songs re-recorded with MQA... it was like Frank Sinatra and Bob Dylan were in my living room. The Super HL5s are so warm and precise at the same time. The soundstage is wide and deep - you can listen to them for hours on end and you don’t get aural fatigue... just fabulous.
Alan please don’t tinker too much with the design."
Thank you for your great suggestion for this feature Bruce.

Audio Ingang showcases P3ESR
at X-fi Audioshow 2016
Audio Ingang, Benelux distributor for Harbeth,
had a big presence on the X-fi Audioshow last
weekend (24th-25th September 2016) in
'De Koningshof', Veldhoven. They featured
all their brands including Harbeth in three demo
rooms.
The Harbeth P3ESR was combined with two
Velodyne SPL-1200 Ultra subwoofers and electronics by Lindemann. The Lindemann musicbook:25 was able to stream all possible digital file formats and for analog duties, a beautiful Bergmann Magne turntable was used. A great little setup that really demonstrated the hidden powers of the P3ESR. |
