It has been over a year since God called us out of Mexico and into the relatively small city of Del Rio. Two days ago was the 1st anniversary of the tornado that wiped out 2 colonies in our sister city Acuña. We have watched and participated as the local churches ministered to the affected families. Today there are 2 home churches in the area that have been raised up and are meeting regularly. God is doing a mighty work in Acuña.

But, it doesn't end there. Here in Del Rio we have been working diligently on a new church start, City Church Del Rio with our Pastor, Larry Floyd: Simply focused to love God, love people, and serve the world starting with the town of Del Rio. Shon is serving as the Missions Pastor (the only one in the city of Del Rio) and Janeene is serving as Children's Minister. God is using us both to minister to our community both in Del Rio and in Acuña.

Our first few months in Del Rio had us scratching our heads wondering why God wanted us here. We made a white board of all the things we thought we could contribute to this community. Then, we looked at it everyday. We prayed over it, and we waited for God to move. Today I am writing to you because God is moving! And it is so exciting that I cannot contain it, and I must share with you the awesome faithfulness of our God.

I have to confess that Children's Ministry was not my first choice. I love ministering with my husband, we make a great team and it didn't seem like we could still minister together in such different roles. While I continue to have doubts about my qualifications and skills in this position, God continues to show me that it isn't about me. For example, I opened the registration for our VBS 2 weeks ago simply by posting it on 2 Facebook pages and announcing it to our church (congregation of approx 80). Within one week we had almost 50 kids register (only 3 of which attend our church). Today, one week from the scheduled start date, we have 140 kids registered! God is faithful!

I also have the opportunity to head up a summer reading program at all 3 low income housing developments here in the town (that's 600 houses). Teachers and community members have signed up to read out loud to the kids once a week for the 10 weeks of summer. I created a "theme" around 10 different books (1 for each week) so the books we read aloud can come to life with games, crafts, and snacks. We are also blessed to be able to feed the kids lunch. We will also have a mobile library so that the kids can check out a book for the week to take home and read. At the end of the program each child will be presented with a homemade bookshelf (made by mission groups visiting this summer) and a bag of 15-20 books (many donated by you) including a Bible and information on healthy living, mental health, family health and counseling, and spiritual health to start their own home library. I am in absolute awe at the way God has orchestrated this program, from the relationships He has forged to the resources and volunteers He has provided. God is faithful! Through this program we hope to form relationships and continue with some sort of family/parenting education classes in the evenings this fall. And our prayer is that through these programs and relationships small Bible Study groups will form leading to organic church starts.

I'm also excited to report that Shon has been given the opportunity to serve as River Ministry Coordinator with Texas Baptists in the Del Rio / Acuña area along the border of Texas and Mexico. His responsibilities include assisting churches in organizing their trips along the border and being the eyes and ears to help pair these churches with other churches along the border to assist in ministry. Along with all of these responsibilities, he also is serving as the coordinator for the local Baptist Association program called Love Loud. This innovative mission is to go into communities that have been identified as not having a local church and establish relationships through block parties, sports camps, back yard Bible clubs and prayer walking . The long term goal of the associations Love Loud program  is to plant new churches in Del Rio and Eagle Pass.

God is on the move here in Del Rio and your generosity and obedience to God makes it possible for us to be used in His service. Thank you for your support.
