Not By Bread Alone
Food is good for the body because the body needs to be fed to grow and develop but man does not depend only on food (i.e. bread) for its survival. Jesus informs the devil that "man shall not live by bread alone" (Luk 4:4, Mat 4:4). This piece of writing seeks to reflect on this statement of Jesus Christ.
Beware of Food
Adam and his wife were given every edible thing in the Garden of Eden for food except eating from the three of the knowledge of good and evil because if they did, they would die (Gen 2:17, Gen 3:3). But the devil went to them in the Garden and made them see the forbidden tree as a blessing to them instead of death (Gen 3:5). It is read that:
"And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat" (Gen 3:6).
The tree was seen to be pleasant in their eyes and good for food, so they did it. Thus, both Adam and his wife fell into sin and fell short of the glory which God had given them, so they began running away from His presence (Gen 3:10). The relationship between them and their Maker was, therefore, marred. Because of this, they were driven away from the Garden of Eden so that they could not also eat of the tree of life and live on forever (Gen 3:22-24). The devil wanted to lure Jesus into eating that which had the possibility of robbing him of His blessings in heaven.
Jesus and bread
After Jesus had been baptized by John the Baptist, He was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the enemy. While in the wilderness, He became angry when He had fasted forty days and nights (Mat 4:1-2). Then the devil went to Him and said: " If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread" (Mat 4:3). But Jesus answered and said:
"It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (Mat 4:4).
Jesus was being tempted to turn a stone into bread and eat because He was hungry, and also, to prove His power and authority as the Son of God. But Adam and his wife were not deceived to eat of the forbidden tree because they were hungry, but that they might be like God. The devil knew that in both cases, food could be the best bait to perpetuate his plans. Adam and his wife failed to understand and accept the fact that man can live by being obedient to the word of God. It is living by the Word of God that makes one eats of the tree of life.
The Tree of Life
Adam yielded to the deception of the devil and ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, so he missed the tree of life which could have made them live forever. This tree of life is for only those who remain obedient to the word of God. As John writes, "To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God" (Rev 2:7). Jesus would have missed out too if He had obeyed the devil as Adam did. John again adds that "Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city" (Rev 22:14) of God.
Adam and his wife were denied access or the right to the tree of life. They were driven away from it after their disobedience so that they would not eat of it and live forever in their sins. Jesus did not sin so He lives forever in righteousness. He also has the right to give the tree of life to all those who remain faithful to Him. Therefore, the tree of life is for all those who overcome the devices of the enemy and live in obedience to the Word of God.
Food has been used to tempt and shipwreck many spiritual and physical lives and relationships. It was food that was used to tempt the first family and barred them from eating of the tree of life. Jesus did not repeat their mistake so He defeated the evil one and He is now living eternally in our hearts and in Heaven and He has given all believers the right to the tree of life.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to identify the devices of the enemy so that we shall not fall into His traps, but shall live to please you and enjoy the tree of life.
