THE WEEKLY DEKE

Deke's Techniques? or More Like
Deke's Annoyance Abatement Advice

Hey, dekeQuarians and other members of the dekeZodiac. Colleen here, bringing you news of what's going on in the dekeIverse. First up, the latest free episodes of Deke's Techniques. The last two weeks have brought not as much of the usual creative chicanery, but rather Deke's advice for avoiding some of the more annoying "features" of the latest Creative Cloud updates. First, Deke tackled turning off the not-so-helpful "Live" Rectangles in Illustrator, to which one Facebook fan replied, "Oh mY GOD -- and I thought it was just me." (We always know we're feeling people's pain when the capitalization goes askew.) Last week, Deke tackled the new "Start" screen in Creative Cloud apps; in particular how to prevent it from coming up when you don't have a file open.

THE LATEST IN DEKE

Photoshop CC 2015 One-on-One: Advanced

Lynda.com, knowing that students don't want to wait, has released the first half of Deke's Photoshop CC 2015 One-on-One: Advanced course. For this round, we've done away with "Intermediate" and just skipped right to Advanced. (I don't think people identify as "Intermediates" very often.) Among other things, you can learn how to use the transformation tools to make the cool movie poster above. In fact, you can click here to watch the first movie of that chapter, "Scale, Rotate, Skew, and Warp." (In extra fact, you can always scan a table of contents at Lynda.com for a play symbol, which indicates those particular movies are free. If you're not a member and you need to watch more (who wouldn't?), then you can sign up for 10 free days at lynda.com/deke. The second set of chapters are due to be added the first week of March, and we'll keep you posted over at deke.com.

DEKE ON REPEAT

Flashback to Fixing a Foot in Photoshop

Deke and I have been looking over old episodes of Deke's Techniques leading up to the 500th (!) episode, and I came across this one (which also happens to be featured more in-depth in the new Advanced course). It's Max and Sam, Deke's sons, atop a pyramid in the Mayan city of Koba, which was taken almost exactly two years ago. I tell you, these boys have grown so much since then, you could convince me it was twenty years ago. Nevertheless, you can relive their childhood (and the straightening and cropping of the photo in preparation for restoring Sam's right foot) in this classic (and still free) episode #334.

DESPERATELY SEEKING DEKE (IN PERSON)

The Creative Pro Conference to Feature Deke and Some Very Venerable Friends

Perhaps the most important thing to know about the Creative Pro Conference this July in Minneapolis, is the subtitle: The Essential Event for Photoshop & Illustrator Users. Actually, the most important thing is that our friends David and Anne-Marie have already enlisted a stellar line-up of creative pros who will be teaching Photoshop and Illustrator geared toward designers. Deke will of course be there...bringing back his epic Channels and Masking full-day tutorial, along with other sessions. More details to come, but you can register here if, like me, that's all the info you need to convince you! Hope to meet many of you there. And David just sent me discount code CPDEKE for $100 off any pass for friends of Deke.
DEKE DOINGS

Advanced Illustrator, Ever More Deke's Techniques, and Other Stuff On the Way

Deke's in the studio as I type this, working on the Illustrator CC 2015: Advanced course. Of course, the monster (500 episodes and no sign of stopping) work that is Deke's Techniques needs constant feeding, and he's got a few random surprises on the way, as well.

But even though he's doing his digital diligence in the dark den of the studio, Deke still sends all his virtual love.
