Greetings dekeDivers. We come to you from under the sea this week. Well, not really, because we don't yet have housings for our laptops and, frankly, the wifi at the bottom of the ocean is problematic. But, we're celebrating the release of Deke's latest course—a collaboration with our friend and underwater photo mentor Hergen Spalink—called Learning Underwater Photography, just released at Lynda.com this week
DEKE UNDER THE SEA

Learning Underwater Photography

We first met Hergen at an annual underwater photo workshop in the Lembeh Strait in Indonesia. Deke had just bought a housing for his DSLR and was taking his first non-GoPro shots underwater. It became clear that this was going to be the first conference where I'd ever seen Deke awake for the first lecture of the day. And we were on vacation, no less.
Hergen and his partner Kerri (who took this hammerhead shot above) have been teaching people how to take great photos (and, ahem, become better divers) all over the world, most recently concentrated in Indonesia.
It soon became clear that Hergen's ability to calmly and technically explain underwater shooting concepts was a perfect match for Deke's ability to draw awesome diagrams in Illustrator.
In August, we even got to visit Hergen and Kerri at their home in Bali and take the gear out for some actual hands-on, under-the-sea instruction. (While Herg helped Deke adjust his real-world lighting here, Kerri was busy coming up with an underwater hand signal that reminded me to exhale all the way.)
The result is a course that'll get you started taking your own underwater photographs, or just let you sit back and enjoy some amazing photography. Check out the course at Lynda.com, and if you're not a member, you can get a free 10-day trial subscription at lynda.com/deke. (You can check out a sample video at deke.com about why "it's better underwater.")
THIS WEEK'S TECHNIQUE

Deke's Techniques: Projecting Simple Shapes in 3D Perspective in Illustrator

Back on dry land, this week, Deke accepts a challenge from a member of the dekeOmmunity to recreate an effect from a movie poster. Using dynamic effects and four simple shapes, he warps the configuration of an unseen orb. You can check it out for free at Lynda.com, where the entire library of Deke's Techniques lives, many of them unlocked even if you're not yet a member.
DEKEWORLD DISPATCH

Photoshop Updates, Pen Tool Instruction, and More Underwateriness on the Way

Deke's been in the studio finishing the recording of his Pen Tool Mastery course (done!), working on more Deke's Techniques (never done!), and preparing for Hergen to return next week to work on an underwater macro photography course (blub!).

After surviving the kids' Halloween Haunted House (whew!) and the American presidential election (we hope!), we're headed to Mexico on a family scuba trip for Thanksgiving. We're gonna see if we can survive everyone keeping track of their own GoPro, along with managing their scuba gear. If you've ever wanted to find a spare GoPro, snorkel, or dive computer, you might try the bottom of the Sea of Cortez in early December after Team McClelland departs.

Meanwhile, be on the lookout for upcoming courses on the (aforementioned) Pen tool, wide-angle underwater photography, and some imminent Photoshop CC updates.

As always, Deke sends his briny, nitrogen-rich, fish-filled love.
