DEKE THIS WEEK

Deke's Techniques: Turn Day to Night

As usual at this time of year, Deke is spending an inordinate amount of time dedicated to Halloween-themed techniques. In the latest free episode (and three follow up movies) of Deke's Techniques, Deke turns the daylight dwelling on the left into a haunted house on the right, replete with backlit windows, a bat-filled nighttime sky, and, of course, a ghost in the window. Even if you're not a Halloween freak like Deke, this video will give you some mad masking skills that are useful all year 'round. And if you're not a member, you can get a 10-day trial by signing up at lynda.com/deke

TRICK OR DEKE

Deke's Techniques: Create a Bat-Faced Moon for Halloween (Photoshop or Illustrator)

Deke's joy of haunty holidays can never be contained to just one week or one project. In last week's free Deke's Techniques episode, Deke demonstrated how to use layer effects, vector masks, and the Warp mode of the Free Transform tool in Photoshop to make this delightful bat-faced moon composition
For members (or those who take advantage of the free 10-day trial at lynda.com/deke), Deke has an exclusive video in which he makes a cartoonish Illustrator-based version of the bat-faced moon. You can see how to create these bat-shapes using simple addition, subtraction, and intersection of primitive shapes (no drawing skill required). For some reason, I find this one even more awesomely creepy.
DEKE ON REPEAT

Deke's Techniques: Gooey Green Slime Text

The Halloween tradition has been going on for a while around here, and so this week's Deke on Repeat flashback technique features this green slimy text from Deke's Techniques 267. These delightfully drippy letters were a riff off the ones created in Deke's Techniques 266, then made green and gooey in an exclusive movie. Remember, if you're not a member of Lynda.com, you can get a free 10-day trial by signing up at lynda.com/deke
