Last week, our church’s staff and I attended the 2018 Leadership Institute at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection (Leawood, KS). The trip included several unexpected hours of sitting in DFW after a missed flight, after which we hopped from standby list to standby list just trying to find a plane that would take us to Kansas City. Now while popular legend tells us that St. Peter himself will greet us at the Pearly Gates of Heaven, this time it was a saintly man named Paul, an American Airlines employee, who fought through the standby list on our behalf and let us through the not-so-pearly gate down the ramp to the plane to KC. Wherever Paul is today, may God bless him!

Airport (mis)adventures aside, the conference was inspiring. Our staff team brought back several great ideas and insights that will continue to shape the way we do ministry at The Oaks. One in particular that I want to share with you is our experience with a man named Dr. John Ed Mathison. Dr. Mathison retired as a Methodist pastor about a decade ago. During his 36 years at Frazer Memorial UMC (Montgomery, AL), he led the church from 400 people to over 9,000--no small feat! What I appreciated most about Dr. Mathison is that after doing his fair share of Kingdom work over the decades, in retirement he is still going strong. With a Spirit-filled intensity he stood before us all and encouraged us not to give up, not to quit trying new things and taking risks for the Kingdom of God. I was so impressed by his continuing witness for Jesus Christ in this world! Dr. Mathison’s message to the conference was simple: while the MASTER, MESSAGE, and MISSION of the Church never changes, the MINDSET, METHODOLOGIES, and MINISTRIES of the Church must continue to change.

In short, church, we must continue to trust in Christ with all we have. But may we also think differently about what it will take to introduce the world around us to Jesus.
