WEEKLY UPDATE FROM LARCHMONT CHARTER SCHOOL AT FAIRFAX
Note from the School Leader
Mersedeh Emrani

THIS WEEK IS EARLY DISMISSAL ON MONDAY – FRIDAY due to student-parent-teacher conferences.  K/1 is dismissed at 12:20 pm and 2/3 is dismissed at 12:30 pm.  Carpool will end promptly at 12:50 pm.  Students remaining at school after 12:50 pm will be sent to after-school until pick up.

Dear Larchmont Fairfax families,

I'm writing with a few updates for the coming week - -

1.  In the spirit of the holidays, and in order to give our community an opportunity to come together for a happy occasion,  please join us for a Parent Coffee/Breakfast Social this coming Friday after School Sing - - Dec. 11th at 9am!   Our parent coffee topic last month was homework; this month, we'll just focus on socializing and enjoying a nice breakfast together.  We hope you'll all join us!

2.  We're looking forward to seeing everyone during conference week. Parent-teacher-student conferences play a very important role in a student’s development and academic success.  The truth is, teachers and parents often see different aspects of a student’s personality. Only by maintaining an open dialogue and comparing notes on the student’s achievements or behavior can these perspectives be useful for both.  We hope you found the experience beneficial in helping you better understand your child’s academic and social/emotional growth and next steps.

Also, don't forget to stop by the Book Fair in the auditorium either before or after your conference.  Your child should have brought home a list of their favorite selections after a visit to see the books this week during Reading Group. We hope you'll be able to collect some great literature, and we thank you for simultaneously helping to support the school with your participation in the Book Fair!

3.  'Tis the season when unfortunately a lot of our students are getting sick.  Please don't forget to request an independent Study from your child's teacher anytime they miss school.

One child's absence removes $40/day from LCS funding.
One child's absence WITH INDEPENDENT STUDY removes no funding.
LCS lost over $100k last year due to absences (aka no completed independent studies).
This will prevent your child from missing critical information while also helping our school's financial state.  Thank you.

4.  Lastly, I wanted to highlight just a smattering of the amazing things our superb faculty and students have been working on now that we are upon the end of this trimester.   Students have been going on field trips, organizing Community Group activities, working on student council presentations, creating travel posters as part of their social sciences curriculum, meeting community helpers, participating in poetry readings and reader's theater, organizing Spirit Week, and exploring learning through an amazing array of creative approaches too numerous to write about here!  It is an enormous pleasure for me to move through our classrooms from K-3 and see what our teachers have designed to share with the students - - and how the students have expanded it even beyond our expectations!  I hope everyone will take time to give a big Thank You to the faculty for all they do to make school exciting, rewarding and fun for all of our students.  They are an amazing group of dedicated and creative people!

Best,
Mersedeh

On Thursday evening the LCS community appeared before the West Hollywood Planning Commission and successfully fought against a proposed cell tower installation on our Fairfax campus. It’s the first step and there will likely be an appeal. Nonetheless, it’s important to mark this moment. The Chair of the Planning Commission shared he was on the commission when LCS first petitioned to inhabit the Fairfax campus. He noted how neighbors had complained the noise of kids would destroy their work-from-home careers. He went on to say, “I don’t know what happened to their careers, but boy, look what happened to your school – your children brought you up well!” He commended our parents on their tremendous preparation, organization and professionalism. This was a moment of parents exemplifying the LCS mission in action of dedicating themselves to improving the world our kids inhabit.  Thank you!

Due to a fantastically steady stream of donations, we are extending the Jogathon donation deadline throughout the holiday break! Please continue reaching out to your friends and family, post your links online and let's keep the donations rolling in. All donations are tax-deductible and go towards keeping Larchmont Charter School the best it can be.

Our community was on fire again on Friday cheering as our kids ran laps around the track at the Hollygrove Jogathon – just as the Fairfax and Selma kids did a couple of weeks back and just as the LFP students will do on 12/18. This community is unmatched when it comes to strongly, visibly and actively supporting our kids.

The strength of this community, its celebration of diversity in every meaning of the word and the work our teachers and leaders do everyday to ensure the next generation is compassionate and service oriented ultimately sows peace in our campus communities with the goal of it rippling outward. It breaks my heart that there’s been yet another horrific event directly affronting the peace we all seek. I want to share the following link to help guide conversations with your children about this – it’s from an expert in child psychology and provides developmentally appropriate suggestions for different age groups.

Lastly  - we need to hear from you to build on our strengths and get better – please take 5 minutes to complete the parent survey now.  Please complete one survey per child enrolled at LCS by Monday, 12/7 - we want your feedback!

Thank you for all you do to support our school!
