Hi <<First Name>>

Now we're into March with signs of Spring, the daffodils are looking lovely if a bit windswept. Strange to think that last month we were out in tshirts, now it's back to hats and gloves. Whatever the weather you'll always get a warm welcome at The Centre.

The Family Fun Night earlier this month went very well with plenty of fun and games.

Our next big event is the Children's Nearly New Sale on Saturday, 30th March. Come along and get a bargain.

Other dates for your diary are Roller Disco on 11th May and and the Plant Sale on 18th May.

Memory Cafe, Ken's Ballroom Dance and the RSPB talks are on soon, see below, also read about Halton Juniors FC and more, and Enjoy a Ball Easter camps. Book soon to get a place for your child.

There are opportunities in the Coffee Shop for students who are working towards their volunteer module of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. If you know of someone aged 14-17 who would be interested please pass on the information. See below for details.

You can also read about some of the volunteers below. Why not consider joining our team to help in the week? It may seem that there are lots of volunteers but they have other commitments, holidays, hospital appointments etc and it is good to have back up, especially on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

COFFEE SHOP OPPORTUNITIES

Duke Of Edinburgh Award Volunteers

Since the Coffee Shop first opened in 2013, several students have come here whilst working towards their volunteer module of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
If you know someone who might be interested, please let them know, as there will be places for students during the Easter and summer holidays at the weekends.

Some of our Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteers have used this experience to enhance their CVs which has helped them to secure paid work elsewhere. We can’t offer payment but being a volunteer for the Coffee Shop will look great on your CV - and we can offer snacks!

Volunteers help run the Coffee Shop and provide a friendly atmosphere for our customers ranging from young children to the more mature.

Young volunteers (age 14-17 years) will work alongside a responsible adult. Hours are flexible with an average of 2-3 hours per week.

We are also looking for some more volunteers for the Coffee Shop in the week on a casual or regular basis.

Adult volunteers may work on their own for a short time but it’s usually with the support of the Centre staff Monday to Friday or with a Weekend Supervisor. There are Supervisors in the Coffee Shop at the busiest times - weekends and school holidays.

We introduce volunteers to our Coffee Shop in a friendly and informal way. There’s just a short Registration Form and an Equal Opportunities Form to complete, no CV required.

Talk to Coffee Shop supervisor Pauline on 01524 770682, or 07799 502199 or email coffeeshop@haltoncentre.org

You’re welcome to pop into the Coffee Shop at a weekend and discuss the role with one of the Weekend Supervisors.
People volunteer at the Coffee Shop for a number of reasons.

When Sallie first moved to Halton she found that becoming a volunteer for the Coffee Shop was advantageous, a good way to get to know people.  She supports the centre as it does such a good job; the Coffee Shop gets masses of positive feedback and it’s really nice to be on the receiving end.

She also loves meeting the Duke of Edinburgh award volunteers from senior schools and training them up during the Easter and summer holidays. She said, ”If I hadn’t done this I wouldn’t feel so connected to the village.”

Pauline likes the mix of people and of generations, not only local people but from further away. She loves meeting and chatting to them, and giving them advice about what’s on at the Centre. She first brought her grandchildren here after walking the dog and thought what a fantastic place with a great playground, and they often had lunch or a snack.

That’s what led Pauline to get involved.  She helps out when she can at events too. Besides organising the rota she tries to recruit new volunteers.
One of our volunteers, Ruth showing us the delicious homemade cakes,
made by another volunteer Pat.
One of the volunteers, Susan has served in the Coffee Shop since its early days and is so pleased to see it develop into a professionally run popular venue.  “Working as a volunteer is very rewarding - meeting a wide range of people, knowing that you are also making a worthwhile contribution to The Centre and the Halton community."

The Coffee Shop is the heart of The Centre @ Halton, and she believes it is a fine example of a successful and well run community centre supported and appreciated by the local residents.

Another volunteer, Brenda, says she has found the customers very friendly and appreciative and she too, feels appreciated here and contributing to village life. Brenda’s voluntary experience has given her the confidence to volunteer elsewhere and for other events like Luncheon club, roller disco, and family fun nights.

She adds that there is no pressure to help regularly but as we all have busy lives and odd appointments, we can always do with people who could fill in occasionally so we can remain open every day. It would be great to welcome some new friends to be part of our happy team.
