..... Club Support
Tennis Auckland hosted the first forum in a planned series of presentations going forward as part of the Club Support Programme. The first presentation was about funding which was very timely due to the recent community grant policy changes adopted by Auckland Council. This policy was outlined to club representatives present on the night by Shamila Unka (Team Leader Sport and Recreation at Auckland Council) and her team. She outlined the local board policy of quick response, local and multi-board grants and explained the regional grant process. Each local board now has its own grants programme for 2015/16 with their own priorities, eligibility, budgets and accountability and this information was of great interest to the fifty club representatives present on the night. Shamila was assisted with the presentation by Marion Davies and Kim Squire. Club representatives were given a good opportunity to ask a range of questions about the new policy and how it might impact funding applications.
Two club presidents also spoke on the night to talk about their efforts in raising funds for different projects. Suzanne Florian from the Te Atatu Tennis Club gave an enthralling presentation about how she secured funding for new courts, fencing and floodlights over the last few years. Her message was quite clear to clubs – funding is available so go out and seek it to make improvements at your club. And, if you have never applied for grants before don’t be afraid to take that step.
Graeme Norman, Club President at Belmont, gave a slick presentation about his efforts in raising $400,000 in recent years for court resurfacing and clubhouse renovations. Graeme spoke about the importance of building relationships, contacting funding organisations, submitting quality applications and perseverance.
We should also mention that Brian Craig, ex-President at Cockle Bay Tennis Club delivered a very informative account of how he successfully applied for grants to help his club. He echoed the sentiments of other speakers about the importance of putting together good applications and ensuring that all monies received were properly spent and accounted for.
Judging by the feedback from club representatives present at the forums we believe that many of them will be motivated towards submitting grant applications in the months ahead.
