1. Appetite for Justice Blog - Overtime for Farm Workers

"Rocket science? I don't think so. Problematic priorities? Methinks yes!"

Food Empowerment Project's founder and Executive Director lauren Ornelas recently attended a meeting with politicians, farm workers, and community leaders to urge lawmakers to pass legislation to pay farm workers overtime.

Unlike most workers in the state of California (where much of our produce is grown), farm workers are not compensated for the overtime hours they work.  This is one of the many ways in which farm workers experience terrible injustice.

Read about this critical issue and why F.E.P. stands by these farm workers!

2. Cowspiracy Conference

lauren and animal rights author/F.E.P. volunteer Mark Hawthorne will both be speaking at the Cowspiracy Conference for Sustainability & Activism in Berkeley, CA, on September 17th. Check it out!

4. Media Coverage!

"We need to make sure that what we talk about and how we do things is inclusive to everyone."

— lauren Ornelas

There's  a great interview with lauren on Animal Rights Zone you can listen to on the topic of intersectionality or what lauren calls "connections of issues." lauren explains that connecting the issues means including both human and non-human animals in the circle of compassion.

Make sure to also check out the great piece focusing on F.E.P.'s work in the May/June issue of Vegan Health and Fitness magazine.  You can read all about lauren's campaign against Whole Foods Market in the early 2000's and how she was the spark that got Whole Foods co-founder John Mackey to go vegan! We're delighted the magazine highlighted our work and that they printed our whole list of recommended chocolate!

5. Sonoma County VegFest

Bay Area supporters, if you're heading up to the Sonoma County VegFest on August 20th, be sure to stop by our table and say hello!

6. WA Chapter Update

On July 7, 2016, the Washington Chapter of F.E.P. held its first official fundraiser in downtown Seattle. Supporters and friends enjoyed fresh vegan bites from Fire and Earth Kitchen while listening to the delightful voice and piano of Coreena.  Volunteer Coordinator Anika Lehde, volunteer Ariel Bangs, and supporter Dr. Kathryn Gillespie spoke about their experiences with connected justice and activism while attendees enjoyed original cocktails made by volunteers.

Altogether the intimate event raised more than $2,600 for F.E.P., which was doubled by the anonymous matching grant. A wonderful night made all the more incredible by the generosity of F.E.P. supporters. Check out the photos here!

To stay in touch with the Washington Chapter, you can follow the WA Chapter on Facebook.

Thanks so much to our hard-working and dedicated team of volunteers in Washington. We are so grateful for your energy and commitment!
