President's Message

Happy New Year!
Another year of the history books, and what a year it was.....let's see what happens. There's an o;d Chinese saying, and its either a blessing or a curse, depending on how its said and your outlook,
"May you live in interesting times" and it is definitely been interesting.
This month in the club we again welcome our good friend, Rick Jeffry, with a repeat of his very popular cypress forest demo/workshop. See Rick's message below. His email is, please respond to his call for material.
Watch the weather this and next month, the freezing temps will surprise you and losing a tree to the cold is not fun.
As always, yours truly in bonsai,
The Prez

MEETING DATE January 13, 2017
Meeting 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

From Rick!
On Friday the 13th (oh my!) we will be creating cypress forests for our club to raffle off at the upcoming convention.  We learned just how valuable these little forest are at our last convention.  In case you missed it, our club set a monetary record for a 2 Day Raffle. Yahoo!

Adam and I are planning a trip to a nursery soon to purchase the cypress trees we need.  Hopefully some of the more senior members of the club have accumulated some appropriate pots/slabs over the years and are able to donate one or two for the program.  I know many of the newer members are not in a position to donate and that is understood.  Please bring some energy and willingness to learn and participate……after we create our masterpieces club members will take the compositions home and baby-sit (keep them wet) until the convention……
It would be helpful to know what our members would be donating.  The club can then purchase the appropriate number and size of cypress material.  Please reply to me or Reply to All so we can figure out our needs, without over buying and wasting club money.  Thanks and I look forward to seeing you soon.  Rick J.

PS…I believe the club is supplying our soil needs, if not I’m sure Adam or Paul will send out a request for some funky moisture holding soil too!

I plan on donating (remember I am old and my bonsai hobby is winding down)   2 pots  (18 X 12 X 2)   and  2 shallow slabs………  I bet they can handle 25 to 30 trees  (1.5” caliper down to pinky sized)
We are three months into our new year so, if you haven't paid your annual dues, please see our Treasurer, Dave, to be sure you stay in good standings with the club. Guests are welcome with no obligation to join. Hope to see you there!!
Membership Dues
Individual, $30;
Family, $45;
Student, $15

Membership entitles you to the Bonsai Societies of Florida magazine, Florida Bonsai, published four times a year, as well as our monthly club newsletter, CFBC Clippings, 2 meetings a month and more!
MONTH Bonsai Care

Tropicals: Keep you eye on the temperatures this month. Some tree are sensitive at 45 degrees while other subtropical can go down to near freezing before you need to protect.   There are many way to protect your trees from simply covering them from a frost to bringing them inside on cold nights.

Deciduous:  Come on cold weather get here and help these trees go dormant.  A front is approaching that should help the trees lose their leaves and prepare them for hard pruning and root work.  No fertilizing until Spring

Evergreens:  Okay its time for needle plucking.  Reduce the number of branches where the candles formed to two.  Needles near the top of the tree for JBP should be reduced to two while lower branches should keep at least three needles
