PICNIC AND AUCTION DATE Sunday June 12, 2016
Meeting 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

Just over a year ago I got word that Sandy Racinski was in discussions to volunteer the CFBC to cohost the 2016 BSF Convention. Which promptly caused my stomach to turn with worry and my mind to begin to race.  I never thought that our small club could handle such responsibility nor would we have the volunteers needed to run such an event.  This past weekend the BFS Convention was held at the Florida Mall Hotel and the CFBC not only stepped up, but blew it out of the water!   Everyone that was there offered their time and talents in various capacities and you all should be so proud of what you did!

Sandy and Adam should be commended for their dedications for the countless planning conference calls, acquiring workshop and demo materials.  Your positive attitudes and belief in the Central Florida Club truly made this happen.  Selecting the perfect people to appoint in roles in which they excel was also a key to the success!  Rick, Betsy, Alan, Aaron, Dave, Gail and Judi gathered donations and ran that raffle better than anyone ever!  Adam's directed the setup with the help of Jorge and Don along with many other had the vendor area plastic rolled out like clock work.

All I can say is thank you all (and those that I may have forgotten to mention) for everything you did to make this event a success and for bringing in funds for the CFBC.  This helped so much  to bring some much needed breathing room and a means to secure our future as a club.  Many fun events and demonstrations will be made possible because of what you all did.

As we close our formal meetings for the 2015-2015 year we will be having our Annual Picnic and Auction will be held at the usual meeting location.  We are planning on starting to set up around 11:00am and should start eating 11:30 or so.  Please be sure to bring a side dish to share and something for the silent or live auctions. It's always a great way to enjoy each others company and to tell the stories of our trees.

BSF Convention Raffle

The CFBC Raffle Team for this years convention was Alan Chryst, Judi Holihan, Aaron Guerra, Gail Parillo and Besty Hoagg

I want to thank each of you for the awesome job you did.   Mike Knowlton recognized me at the Banquet for managing the most successful one day raffle ever. I thanked him and moved on. What I should have said was “the Central Florida volunteers made the difference!"  Each of you played a huge (YUGE) role in our success.  Each of us have unique skill sets, when they are embraced and valued, the team succeeds!  I am one of those people who work best in the “team” environment.  Thank each of you for contributing to our team.  We ROCKED em’!  Obviously, the quantity and quality of the generously donated items played a large role in our success.  Thank each of you for your generous donations.  (The most stressful part of the event (for me) was wondering if we were going to acquire enough quantity and quality items for a two day/six raffle event.  hindsight proved that to be the least of our worries.

CFBC TAKES 2nd PLACE AT CONVENTION CLUB NIGHT!

It was another fun filled event for the team that put together this years entry for Club Night.  Our short minutes of planning was enough to put together this beautiful Schefflera bonsai styled like a tropical windswept island.  Second place earned the club $250 which will be great help for next year's programs.  Thanks to Adam Lavigne, Diane and Benjamin Lorber, and Sandy Racinski for helping design this wonderful little treasure!

May Bonsai Care

Tropicals:
Keep up the fertilizer and the pruning. Repotting should have started last month and should continue with the most tropical trees like buttonwood, bucida and tamarind waiting for consistent 70f nights.

Deciduous:
If your deciduous trees are at the ramification stage of development, now might be the time to defoliate, if they are healthy and growing. Fertilization should have taken place last month so hold off on it until the new growth that comes with the June work hardens off.

Evergreens:
Depending on how far north or south you are in the state, summer Black pine work is coming up. The middle of the month is a good time to think about it. If you are not sure what you should be doing for the development stage of your tree, ask an expert like Mike Rogers for help. A private session is worth more than you pay for it.
Junipers should be slowing growth and might be ready for some summer wiring and bending. Be very careful that they have slowed down or you could damage the bark if the sap is really flowing.
