We are all things home.

December 2019

It really is the most wonderful time of the year. Snow has greeted us a little early this winter and so decorating the office is in full swing! With the anticipation of many holiday gatherings coming, we feel blessed to serve our community. Our staff at NWWVT is working hard to close the year with the successful completion of projects and a full house (meet our new staff member below). As the snow falls, we hope for peace, warmth, and health for our fellow Vermonters and hope you will be spending time with family this holiday season. We extend blessings to you and hope that you will look to us for all things home in the coming New Year.

From all of us at NWWVT, we wish you happy holidays and a healthy New Year!

Welcome, Liz!

Elizabeth Karle, Liz, joined the NeighborWorks team as the organizations Financial Director in November.

"I grew up in Berkshire County, MA, in an area similar to Rutland. I left to complete my Bachelor’s of Accounting at Bentley University and lived in the Boston area for a few years, but knew that the city wasn’t for me. I moved to Vermont, not sure what I was looking for at the time, but found my soon to be husband and work at a local non-profit. Spring Lake Ranch’s finance department was my home base for the last 6 years while I started my family, finished my MBA, and bought a home nearby. During my home buying experience, my husband and I both signed up for the Homebuyer’s Education Course, which introduced me to NeighborWorks. I recently decided to find a new challenge in life, and a non-profit mission which spoke more to my roots. I’m excited to learn more about the opportunities NeighborWorks provides to the community and to help ensure we can support those goals!"  ~Liz

Fifteen Years at Kazon

As 2019 comes to an end, we took a look back at some of our biggest accomplishments and realized that this year marked the fifteenth anniversary of coming to the Kazon Building!

Built in 1925 as a shirt factory, and then a dress factory, the Kazon Building has been a landmark in the West Rutland neighborhood. In 2002 when NeighborWorks purchased the building, it had most recently been a living and workspace for artists and was in need of some repair. Working within historical guidelines and a noted architectural firm, NeighborWorks of Western Vermont turned the Kazon Building into the vibrant combination of commercial, housing, and community space that it is today while keeping the building's classic features. This building continues to provide a home for our staff and a welcoming place for customers to seek information and services. We hope to be here for many years to come!

Closed For The Holidays

Just a friendly notice that our office will be closed to the public from Monday, December 23th through Wednesday, January 1st for our staff to take time off and work on projects. For any payments due, our drop-box is always available at our main entrance. You may also arrange for appointments during that week by calling our office ahead of time at 802-438-2303. Wishing you all Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

The Bennington Rental Rehab program offers loans and grants as well as support to small scale rental property owners who want to make health, safety, and efficiency improvements to their rental properties in the Town of Bennington. Photos were taken during the Greenawalt project.

Bennington Rental Rehab Final Phase 1 Project

This project was an extensive learning process for the owner. The work kept expanding as the original plan was rather modest but ended up being a whole gut rehab. The result was a much higher quality project using things such as Rockwool insulation throughout which make it extremely quiet (from street noise and from the other apartments). The original hardwood floors are being finished and ceramic tile is going in all the bathrooms. While this rental is income controlled, the feeling of the place is much more upscale. The homeowner is now starting his second Rental Rehab project with NWWVT.

"Partnering with NWWVT allows me to go much further with the renovations than I could have by myself. Their connection to other service providers leverages the expertise that is focused on the property. Everyone benefits." ~ D. Greenawalt, Bennington, VT

We make home possible, and we want you to keep your home and family safe this holiday season!

Holiday Home Safety

The holidays are a time of celebration and invite all kinds of fun from hanging decorations, stringing lights and lighting candles to making extra room for guests. The distinct sounds, smells, and sights of the holidays add to the most joyous time of the year and we want to make sure your family and home stay safe. With all the joy and fun also comes high rates of injuries, crime, and fire. Read on to find out how to keep your home safe this holiday season:

We are bigger than you think!

Did You Know?

Did you know that NeighborWorks of Western Vermont is a member of the national NeighborWorks America network? We are actually larger and stronger because of our network membership. NeighborWorks America is a congressionally chartered nonprofit organization dedicated to creating places of opportunity across the country. NWWVT is one of 242 members of NeighborWorks America's network (with one in every state), receiving technical assistance, flexible grants, comprehensive and tailored training, and the opportunity to interact with and learn from fellow professionals from a variety of sectors.

Over the past 40 years, NeighborWorks and its network have assisted close to eight million people through affordable housing and counseling. Network organizations like our NWWVT are what make NeighborWorks America effective. We look forward to another 40 years of working together to make every community a place of opportunity. We have expanded our programs to include more elements required by strong communities such as our Home Repair program, our HEAT Squad program is now available in 8 counties, and our Homebuyer Education classes have doubled the number of attendees. We hope you will take the opportunity to get to know us and support and utilize our services!

November was a giving month in our office, staff donating over 40 boxes of stuffing and cans of cranberry sauce, along with many other goodies, to the West Rutland Food Shelf.
