DEMAND visited the Bako family in September to measure up their house for much needed safety gates, just like the one featured in Orla’s short film. While some of us were printing tickets and folding napkins for Friday’s Gala, Luke, the newest addition to our design team, was busy designing a gate to help the Bako family live more comfortably in their home.
Luke has joined the design team on an industry placement from Nottingham Trent University, and is using 3D computer modelling software which lets him build a product virtually before using any materials. This way he can be sure that every part of the gate will fit together seamlessly and fit perfectly into the Bako's home.
Lewis, the family’s youngest child has Global Developmental Delay and is unable to understand the potential dangers in his own home. Lewis’ mum worries about him falling on the stairs because he is unsteady on his feet, and as many parents will know, stair gates are not always a barrier for children determined enough to climb over!
One of Lewis’ favourite activities is emptying bottles of bubble bath in the bathroom, so with DEMAND’s tall and robust safety gates it will be a huge weight off mum’s mind knowing both her son and her shower gel are safe.
The generous donations made at our 35th Anniversary Gala mean that Lewis and his family will be able to get the safety gates they desperately need.
