Recorded at the height of summer, using a drumkit borrowed from Arthur Lee’s psychedelic adventurers Love, Sam Forrest’s new album Candlelightwater showcases his love of an off-kilter melody amidst a subtle sheen of delightfully detuned guitar noise, and has a slow-burning atmosphere that will charm fans of both Sonic Youth and Elliot Smith.
In a solo career running parallel to his work as frontman with rock giants Nine Black Alps, Sam has now released six solo albums. Candlelightwater was recorded at home in North Yorkshire, with help from fellow vocalist Hayley Hutchinson (of Forrest’s other group The Sorry Kisses), drum supremo Micah Calabrese, and Nine Black Alps guitar comrade David Jones… most recently seen onstage with The Cribs.
Inviting the listener into a world of elliptical illusions and abandoned gods, Candlelightwater is a bewitching but quietly explosive album; bold, poetic and alluring.
And we’re delighted to welcome Pip Mountjoy to the The Waiting Room for the first time! Pip has enjoyed a whirlwind rise to fame in the last couple of years; chosen to the play the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury in 2013, she returned to the festival off her own bat in 2014, and has also gained a high-profiled admirer in Ryan Adams, who handpicked her to support him on last year’s UK tour.
Her recent EPs Your Skeleton and Ursus Arctos have been the showcase for a rare wit and an eccentric lyrical genius, all bound up in a soaring vocal style that has earned her comparisons to Laura Marling.
‘Subtle songwriting and haunting vocals… Mountjoy is wise beyond her years’ – The Ruckus
