"Our Commitment to Justice"
Tenth Anniversary of DACA, Juneteenth Resources, Advocacy Updates & More
Friends, colleagues, students, alumni, educators, health professionals, first responders, clergy, and community leaders: all members of our DACA family contribute to the vitality of our nation and are integral to the fabric of our communities.
As our nation marks the tenth anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program this week, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) renews our commitment to work with Congress to provide a permanent pathway toward citizenship for DACA recipients. Our commitment to justice compels us to be people for and with others and to pursue the greater good.
Next week marks the 50th anniversary of the Pell Grant program! We will be sharing stories on Pell recipients across the AJCU network with Congress, on social media, in a special newsletter, and much more. Questions? Please write to AJCU's VP for Government Relations, Jenny Smulson: jsmulson@ajcunet.edu.
News from Jesuit Colleges and Universities
The academic year is officially over, but you wouldn't know it based on how busy our schools have been over the past few weeks! Here's what's happening:
Canisius College named John J. Hurley, J.D. president emeritus; the College of the Holy Cross dedicated the Anthony S. Fauci Integrated Science Complex with Dr. Fauci in attendance; Loyola University New Orleans received a $5M gift to establish the Canizaro Center for Catholic Studies; Marquette University received a gift from NBA legend Dwyane Wade to support childhood literacy through Marquette's Ralph C. Hartman Literacy and Learning Center; Regis University announced plans to launch a certificate program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities this fall; the University of San Francisco successfully completed the largest fundraising campaign in its history; and Xavier University was named a Collegiate Purple Star campus for its support of veterans.
We always like sharing new photos from our campuses! Earlier this month, Rockhurst University dedicated Sedgwick Hall: the new facility for Saint Luke's College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Click here to learn more about the facility, shown above left. And two weeks ago, The University of Scranton lit up the Class of 2020 Gateway in orange to commemorate National Gun Violence Awareness Day. See the photo above right and click here to learn more from Scranton's ABC news affiliate. Many thanks to our friends in MarCom for sharing these photos with us!
Finally, in addition to Dr. Fauci and Dwyane Wade, other Jesuit-educated alumni (and students!) are in the news! A Loyola University Maryland alumnus was recently named to the TIME Magazine's "Most Influential" list; a cardiology fellow at Saint Louis University competed for charity on NBC's new series, Dancing with Myself; and a University of Detroit Mercy alumnus is supporting Detroit as a new community ambassador for the Detroit Pistons.
