Celebrating Our Students:
#JesuitEducated Veterans, First-Gen Students & Activists
On Veterans Day, we are grateful for the sacrifices that our student and alumni veterans have made to serve our country. Jesuit colleges and universities are marking the day in a variety of ways, including several on-campus ceremonies and profiles of students and alumni. Click on the following school names to learn more: Boston College, Fordham University, Georgetown University, Gonzaga University, John Carroll University, Le Moyne College, Loyola Marymount University, Regis University, Saint Joseph's University, The University of Scranton, University of Detroit Mercy, and the University of San Francisco. Of note, Military Appreciation Day at Boston College coincides with a Jesuit men's basketball matchup against the University of Detroit Mercy; click here to learn more.
Last weekend, alumni from Le Moyne College and Saint Joseph's University gathered in the nation's capital to welcome veterans traveling to Washington, D.C. on Honor Flights. Many thanks to Jim Minogue of Le Moyne and Julie Dennis of Saint Joe's for sharing this great photo with us!

On Saturday, December 17, all Jesuit alumni and friends are invited to participate in Wreaths Across America at Arlington National Cemetery. This year, all volunteers must register individually through the ANC website; for details on the meet-up location for Jesuit alumni and friends (and post-event reception!), please write to info@ajcunet.edu.
On Tuesday, Jesuit campuses celebrated their First-Gen students during the National First-Generation College Celebration, hosted by NASPA's Center for First-Generation Student Success. In addition to the University of San Francisco (pictured left), the College of the Holy Cross, Marquette University, Regis University and Rockhurst University hosted events to recognize their First-Gen students throughout the week. And Tuesday also marked Election Day! Georgetown University and USF were among the schools whose student activists encouraged voting on their campuses.
St. John's College Struck by Hurricane Lisa
Last Wednesday, AJCU's member in Belize, St. John's College, was among the facilities to be struck by Hurricane Lisa. There is significant damage caused by flooding (as seen here), from collapsed roofs to destroyed computers and electrical infrastructure. St. John's president, Mirtha Alicia "Alice" Peralta, wrote, "We currently serve 2,000 students and 144 faculty and staff, 700 hundred boys at our high school, and 1,200 students at our Junior College, many of whom were also severely impacted by the passage of Hurricane Lisa."

The Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province (UCS) is currently accepting contributions in support of St. John's. Click here to make a donation online, where you can designate it toward St. John's College in Belize.
News from Jesuit Colleges and Universities
It's a big day for Rockhurst University, where Dr. Sandra Cassady will be inaugurated as its 15th president! Click here to watch the ceremony, which will be held this afternoon at 4:00PM ET / 3:00PM CT. We will share highlights of President Cassady's inauguration in next week's issue of AJCU Higher Ed News.
This week, two of our presidents were featured panelists during the 2022 American Marketing Association's Symposium for the Marketing of Higher Education at National Harbor outside of Washington, D.C. President Vincent D. Rougeau of the College of the Holy Cross and President Tania Tetlow of Fordham University (pictured left) shared their perspectives on marketing and higher education, along with President Seth Bodnar of the University of Montana.
Many members of the AJCU Marketing and Communications Network were in attendance for the Symposium, and gathered together for a wonderful dinner last Sunday night! Many thanks to Dave Sonntag of Gonzaga University for coordinating the dinner and Tom Hayes of Xavier University for capturing this group panorama!
We also want to share this great photo of another AJCU Conference from Jill Schur of Loyola University Chicago! Last month, Fairfield University hosted the Jesuit Graduate Enrollment Management Professionals (JGAP), whose members met to share best practices in graduate recruitment and enrollment. Their next meeting will be held next spring on April 12, 2023 in New York City.
This week marked 125 years since the birth of Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker movement, and namesake of Xavier University's Dorothy Day Center for Faith and Justice. In honor of the anniversary, Xavier shared reflections from CFJ staff and students; click here to learn more.

And this week also saw the passing of a pioneer in business ethics: Rev. Gerald F. Cavanagh, S.J. Fr. Gerry's contributions to business education, at both Jesuit and non-Jesuit institutions, was extensive; click here to read an obituary from the University of Detroit Mercy, where he served and taught for more than 40 years. Additional information on Fr. Gerry, including details on his funeral, can be found here from the Jesuits Midwest Province. May he rest in peace.
