For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
and every tongue shall confess to God.
Romans 14:11

No missionary is sent out on their own; behind each one is a selfless group of churches and individuals who have mentored, prayed and given so the missionary could cross cultural barriers to share the gospel.  As for us with every trip home, we try to spend time with our supporting churches to touch base on a personal level.  One way is to call ahead to make time to visit the pastor and see if there is a time to connect with the church body.  Well, this trip home we just popped in to say "Hi."  It has been so much fun to "surprise" everyone by just popping in, no special speaking times, just a low key connecting with lighthearted pleasure.  It has been "really fun".

A Look into our Lives

          Our Growing Family

Our time home has been packed with events and celebrations.  The month of September ushered in a new grandson.  Jesse Joel DeRoos was born late into the evening on the 15th, and his older brother, Jude, was already asleep and really had no clue what was happening right in his own living room.  Jesse weighed 7lbs 3 oz. was 20 3/4 inches long, and both Mom and baby are doing great!  What a joy to celebrate his arrival and watch Zachery and Olivia’s family grow.

Just recently we snuck in a trip to Kentucky to visit Nathaniel and Rachelle's family.  We had a wonderful time playing and hiking in the local park, visiting places they had been, and met their new church home family.  The grand kids are sure growing up.

Our final trip will be to drive to Michigan to join Jonathan and Mandie, and help them celebrate, as they say their wedding vows on October 7.

          Hurricane Update

Many have asked about the impact of Hurricanes Irma and Maria as they passed through the Caribbean.  We are thankful to say that, by the grace of God, both hurricanes traveled mainly north of the island, and as they passed Haiti, they seemed to turn in a northern direction.  While Port Au Prince had heavy rains and some flash flooding, Les Cayes was spared from any measurable rainfall or negative effects.  We know many of you were thinking and praying for our friends and work in Haiti.  Thanks so much for your prayers!

           Standing or kneeling:

During our time back in the U.S., it has been one of excitement, joy, and sorrow.  It’s not that we have had any negative or bad events take place, but rather just the overall impact on us as we watch and listen to the negativity in the news, and the ongoing social conflict regarding the U.S. flag and the national anthem.  We certainly don’t have any new answers for the issues, but we may have a greater appreciation than most for just how special our freedoms are in this country due to our experiences over the years as we have lived and served in foreign countries who struggle to care for their own population.

The very fact that we have these freedoms is due to the willingness of individuals who served, and in some cases died, for their country and flag.  Now the flag is wrongly desecrated by individuals who have claimed the right to do so in the name of freedom.  It seems a bit confusing to us. It would be more appropriate to find another platform to share their concerns and express their “freedoms”.  One should truly consider the collateral damage cause by improper protests.  We agree for the freedom and right to protest, just like we agree for freedom of speech.  However, the place and mechanism should be properly decided.  Although we have freedom of speech, it’s not wise or prudent to yell “fire” in a crowded movie theatre.  It’s the same with the freedom to protest. We question if it’s wise or prudent to wrap the protest in the U.S. flag or national anthem, by not standing, when it represents so much more!!

There is a time and a place to kneel!  The scripture we used at the top of the newsletter talks about how all of us will one day kneel before Jesus Christ. Kneeling is rightfully a reverent action towards our Savior and Lord.  Our position on this whole thing is that we will stand for the flag and kneel in prayer for our country and pray God will heal our land.

Nigeria Update

One of the more recent projects, sponsored by Laborers With Christ through their Faith Agriculture (FAAGRIC) outreach program in Nigeria, has been to concentrate on agricultural education to local secondary schools.  Rev Armstrong is our Nigerian Director for FAAGRIC, and has spent the last 12 years promoting a faith based agricultural and nutritional education program to several villages and states in Southeast Nigeria.

Knowledge is power.  This is so true in countries where the unemployment rate is over 50%.  Students gaining an educational experience in the practical sense will hopefully do two things.  It builds confidence, and it begins to empower.  A special thank you to the Nigerian staff who are truly making a difference for their country.
