And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 1:5-8

2017 was a great year for Laborers With Christ.  As we reflect over this past year, we can see such a good and mighty God.  There may have been times of trials and testing, but God remained faithful and was always there through thick and thin. We look forward to 2018 and a new year to be used of Him to bring glory to His name.

A Look into our Lives

Our Time in the Winder Wonderland:

We are now back in Iowa and, as we write this, the weather outside is cold…very good, and snowing.  The local weather shows the outside temp at 6 degrees, but with a 14 mph wind, it feels more like -12 degrees.  The next couple of day are supposed to get colder.  Such a contrast to our 85 degree weather in Haiti as we headed back to Iowa on the 20th of December.

Our Christmas celebration, although a bit different, was enjoyable.  This year all our kids and grand-kids were away for Christmas.  We spent Christmas day with Les’ sister and her family, along with Les’ mother. A special thanks to Reagan and Lynann and their great hospitality.  Later on, we walked over to our next-door neighbor’s house, and had Christmas day supper with them and some of their guests.  Such a great day of fellowship and celebrating the birth of the Christ-child.

            From the front lines:

During WW11, 15 people supported just one soldier on the front lines.  Today 50 people support a front line soldier.

Many times we think of missionaries as those serving on the front lines just like soldiers on the front lines of a battle field, and they are equally in need of support as well.  Those who “send” offer moral support, logistical support, financial support, prayer support, communication support, or re-entry support.

Whichever way the Lord has used you to support Laborers With Christ (LWC), we want to thank you for being fellow workers to spread the truth in love for the Kingdom.

Exercise your faith muscle

…love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.”  (Part 2)

As we wrap up this two-part series, we will look at ways to Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. Last month we shared about ownership and purpose, and how having a right understanding of these principals are very important to committing ourselves to be more focused in our devotion and service to the Lord.

Another critical aspect of our relationship with Jesus Christ, when it comes to allowing ourselves to be totally consumed in Christ, is the exercising of our faith.  In Hebrews Chapter 11, faith is defined in verse one as, “…the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”   In other words, we are compelled to step out of our comfort zones, and pursue with a passion that which cannot be seen.   Unfortunately, this goes against our traditional mindset. We are actually wired to put merit and value in that which can be seen.  Since we have just celebrated Christmas, let’s use Christmas as an example of this dynamic.  The true purpose of Christmas is to celebrate God giving His son to the world in the form of a child, who would one day be our Savior.  Simple…concise…but can’t be seen.  However, if you look around the celebration seems much more about those things that can be seen…gifts, lights, trees, and red and white costumes.  So much emphasis is put on very peripheral components of an amazingly special time of year.  Why, partially due to what we can and can’t see, and likely also due to the commercial aspect pushed by our modern-day economy and consumerism.

Our faith is really more like a muscle, and the more we exercise it, the bigger it grows.  When it comes to spiritual growth, there is a wide variety of thought out there.  But, scripture is clear, we need to exert effort and energy to strengthen our faith, and strengthen our relationship with Jesus Christ.  Here is a small list of scripture references that is by no means exhaustive.  Note: I have added the bold lettering to highlight the need for our involvement.
  • Hebrews 10:22, “let us draw near with a sincere heart…”
  • Hebrews 10:23, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering…”
  • Hebrews 10:24, “…let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds.”
  • 2 Peter 1:5-8, “Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge; and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness; and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Often, we can treat spiritual growth as something that just “happens”.  Since it’s between God and us individually, it gets “put” on God's lap, and we act like it’s His responsibility to cause our relationship to grow.  We can almost act as if we have no role in our spiritual health.  As we can see through the above-mentioned passages, that’s simply not true.  God not only wants our involvement, He expects it.

As we begin a new year, purpose in your heart to grow closer to the Lord.  Step out in faith, and live for that which cannot be seen.  Exercise your faith muscle, and watch your heart, soul, and mind grow deeper in love with God.

Center of Help

One Starfish at a time

Christella is from the Center of Help.  We think she is around 11-12 years old.  As we live in Haiti, over time everyday Haitian life and sights can become routine and “normal” to us.  It’s often when teams come down and we see and hear their reaction to things that we realize how we simply get use to our surroundings. One aspect where that is certainly true, is regarding how fast the kids need to grow up in Haiti.  One of Christella’s duties at 11 years of age is to help prepare food at the orphanage.  We aren’t talking about turning on a burner and fixing Ramon noodles.  She is using wood over an open fire to prepare rice and some type of sauce.  She also must help with washing laundry…by hand.  It’s very common to see young children work and perform “adult” tasks as a normal part of life.  From hauling gallons of water, if your very small, to buckets of water once a person is big enough to carry them is normal chores for small kids.  Every family member is expected to contribute.

Christella is one of several girls at the Center of Help who are depended upon to help with the responsibilities at the orphanage.  Christella has a very sweet personality, and enjoys when teams visit. It’s very common to find her enjoying the interaction with team members.  We are grateful for the work God is doing in her life and for how she is growing in a protected and godly environment. We are also very grateful for the ongoing support for the Center of Help.  Your contributions have truly made a huge impact!!

               Memories Matter

This one hits too close to home for me having a father who suffers with this.  We try to visit my parents twice a year and never know how much decline will be seen.

Alzheimer's robs the
person and their loved ones of their lives on a whole different level.  It's another epidemic costing Americans more money than cancer.  It is really an unfortunate disease to deal with when there is so much evidence out there that shows that there is hope for the sufferers.

Alzheimer's, is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and worsens over time. It is the cause of 60% to 70% of cases of dementia.
